How the hell did they fight so many fights back in the day? Sugar Ray Robinson fought Jake Lamotta on the 5th of one month, and again on the 26th of the same month! And...he fought someone else in between those two fights.

How did they fight so often back then? How is it they didn't need time to recover? These boxers fought on what resembles a basketball schedule! Even football players play only once a week, and boxing does a lot more damage to the body on a given night than football!

So what is it? Were then better conditioned? Was there less politics in the sport back then? Did they have a lower regard for the health and well being?

Losing does not matter these days as long as you fight the best.

Just goes to show how these cherry pickers have ****ed up the sport, an undefeated fighter loses and he gets rubbished these days, that's why they do this ****.

It's the over reaction of fans that makes boxer afraid to take tough fights.
A loss is not the end of a career, just a speed bump.

Does anyone give a **** tommy hearns lost to hagler?
Hell no, they love that fight.

The top 10 greatest fighters ever have lost fights.
No one in the top 10 of all time is undefeated.

The fighters were not so drastically cutting weight back then, the skill levels varied a lot more as well. Being elite didnt mean you only had to fight elite fighters. A loss was not seen as such a big deal, more overall record and who you fought.

Fighters got paid less then, they had to be in shape year round. If they had an easy fight one week, there was no reason they couldnt be in shape to fight again.

The fighters werent as physically developed strength wise as they are now. It took longer for punishment to add up.

fighting more often, instead of going up from featherweight to lightheavyweight between bouts. maybe that has something to do with it.

Back then Training wasn't any where the level it is now, Robinson might have fought 3 guys a month but his training regiment was much less complex than the ones today, there weren't camps back then, also remember that many of these fights were only shown at Movie Theaters and there wasn't sponsorship so many of these guys had to fight very often just to live.

The fights were fought at a slower pace than they are fought today.

How old school you talking about?
How about the guys in the late 1800's that fought 100+ rounds.

The longest glove fight on record lasted 7 hours and 19 minutes. The bout was called a draw after 110 rounds, with both fighters too tired to conutinue. Purse - $2,500

I have heard older fighters say that a big part of your game plan depended on a 15 round fight. You had to save something for those extra rounds.
