Leonard's reversal of form and virtuosoistic tormenting of Duran was most impressive.

But I think PW beating him in the rematch was a fluke. You saw how well he handled another slick southpaw in Martinez even though I scored the fight 115-113 for PW.

Robinson-Gatti was Ring Magazine's 98 upset of the year

Castillo-Johnston was Ring Magazine's 00 upset of the year

Doesn't equate to being one of the biggest upsets of all time if they stuck out in a single year, on top of Ring magazine getting plenty of things wrong regardless.

Not the biggest in history, but it deserves a mention:

Jon Thaxton vs 'Scrap Iron' Ryan

Thaxton was a very late replacement (came in something like 72 hours before the fight) and had lost 3 of his last 6 (record of 10-3 at the time). Paul Ryan on the other hand had looked impressive, knocking out almost everyone and amassing a 22-0 record), and was about to go on and challenge for a world title. There were worries about his chin, due to him sticking it out in the air in fights and also being floored in the past, however many felt 'Jono' would be a walkover and that he didn't have the power to cause any problems (4 knockouts in 13) and that he in return would be the one that was going to get stopped. Yet, that was not the case and Thaxton went on to knock out the highly touted Ryan in the first round.

One of the biggest in British boxing history IMO.

Douglas-Tyson stuck out in a year and is still remembered. Anywho they're still upsets and I wanted to add my 2 cents:D.

to label an upset as "historical" kinda implies that it was a big fight in the first place which would mean this fight has no business on this thread but it shocked the hell out of me.

and that fight was the andy lee/brian vera fight. steward was telling anyone who would listent that lee would be mw champ by the end of the year and how the kid was the second coming in the mw division. i know that a certain amount of hype from a fighter's camp is to be expected but what i wasnt expecting when i turned the fight on was to see him get stopped by vera. no disprespect to vera but i hadnt been that shocked in a while over a fight.

I didn't think this was a huge upset Bummy. Before the match, Mike candidly told Cosell that he was going for the eyes to try winning on cuts. Rossman had the best jab in the division, so I expected beforehand that he could well pull it off. (What I didn't expect was what also surprised Ali early on, that Galindez had left his "Vicious Victor" persona back in Argentina. But with his susceptibility to cuts, I expected that Rossman's stated intentions to bleed away his title would pay off.)

it bloody shocked me.rossman is one of the poorest champs i've ever seen.
galindez looked like he'd been training for about an hour prior to that fight.the return was a bit different though:good
