Fighters you just never took a fancy to...

De la Hoya, just didnt like the guy.

 

MAB (Morales fan, and MAB's "technical" phase became mind-numbing. Love the Hamed fight though of course...), Hoya (incredibly incomplete as a fighter, was semi-retired for basically half a decade), and to a far lesser degree Monzon.

I plan on really studying Monzon in the near future, but I've put this off a few times already. Thus far his fights have been like Nyquil for me, even though I respect the hell out of him.

 

Floyd Mayweather, Jr... absolutely zero excitement, low risk, high level of bull**** fighter.

 

I guess it would have to be Floyd. He's genuinely one of the most overrated fighters of all time, and painfully boring to watch most of the time.

 

Used to be Gavilan just never saw 'it' in him but now I love him


Jack Johnson is one guy i think is overrated

 

Frank Bruno.

Ricky Hatton.

Henry Cooper.

All 3 are guilty too the charge of obtaining money by deception:smoke

 

That's a bit harsh on Bruno.

Hatton I will certainly give you, even though I've always rooted for him and used to like him as a man until about two years ago.

As for Cooper, I'm not sure. I guess he has made a living out of sticking Ali on his arse....

 

Monzon. In particular, the invention of all these mystical intangibles to explain away something really not that complicated. Maybe I'm missing something.

 

Michael Nunn (had disdain, now it's more pity), Pernell Whitaker (he grew on me later and now I'm a fan), and Hector Camacho.

 

1) Yeh, a bit harsh maybe, but i was right near him on the rail with my 12yr old son hanging over it at the MGM GRAND when he walked towards the ring for the 2nd Tyson fight & watched him freeze up & cross himself non stop like the pope at easter

I nearly swallowed all the spiel about he'll knock tyson out "No Bollocks No Doubt" & the old patriotic churnings in me gut came to the fore but thank **** my head was in the right place as i had $1K on Tyson at 4/1 to wipe him out in 4 rounds which i kept quite about till straight after he'd collapsed into what looked like a very relieved terrified bag of exploding ****:-( then i put on my best yank accent & fled that den of national humiliation laughing along with the crowing yanks about horizontal brits no amount of $$$$ could make up for having to flee with yer tail between yer legs or too be identified as some mug bruno fan, not there, not Vegas, not when yer man's just been wiped out:smoke

2) Hatton, my thoughts on hatton were all confirmed once he & his dad set about the financial **** of all those fans leading upto the mayweather fight that could'nt get tickets & hatton denied he had any knowledge of who had all the tickets when it was his dad at punch who was supplying all the great & the good, celebs & corporate hospitality brigade & his fans had to get chopped up by scalpers + all that speaking in the 3rd person bull****, glad i backed Floyd to knock him out.

3) I've never cut too Cooper as i've never ever here him say a good word about anyone & if he did he end it with a slight dig/putdown, he acted like the queen mother of boxing, picking faults in everyone + the way he's always bitched bitched bitched about how he was robbed in the Bugner fight, he got the whole country to turn on bugner which was unfair & along with his side-kick stooge Harry Carpenter leading the charactor assasination of Joe who was only 21 at the time & cooper 35. Harry boy was also Bruno's stooge as well, total fawning bias.

 

I think Tarver had a load of fans the night grabbed the mic before the start of the fight and asked Roy Jones if he has any excuses tonight, then Ko'd Roy Jones with one punch.

 

Mayweather Jr.

There are times when I'm watching him fight when I think, "Jesus: He might just be the best outfighting-counterpunchng-boxer I've ever seen". Technically, tactically, skill-wise, all that good stuff.

But there's something about him that just leaves me cold. When he's fighting, I can't take my eyes off the dude, and how he reacts to what the opponent is doing, but it's like watching an android, a cipher, a perfectly-programmed nothingness.

Lewis could give you that same feeling on occasions but, in Lewis's defence, there was 'somebody' there. He'd sometimes be complacent, or he'd reach a strategic point where he thought, "Right: He's open for the taking, so let's finish it". He could be overly-strategic, but at least it was human. You just don't get that with Mayweather. It's like he's been grown in a vat in a counter-punchers laboratory or something.
