Lawler says he stuck to the game plan?!?!!?

Interesting game plan. Quite similar to Homer Simpsons one in the episode where he gets to fight for the Heavyweight Championship.

Maybe by stuck to the game plan, he means stayed focused? Ready to counter or something? Because other than that, I didn't see any "game plan" implemented. He was getting lit up, outclassed, and dismantled. Full credit to him for landing the big shot. It was an awesome knockout. But that didn't come from a "game plan" IMO. It came from instinct & reaction.

 

Yeah I was taking the ****. If it was his gameplan he needs a rethink, because in a rematch he would end up having his career ended with that sort of "plan".

 

Well, I actually believe him to be honest. I think he knew his only real chance of winning this fight was to catch Manhoef as he was letting his hands go. However, I don't think that the plan was going too well for him until Manhoef got sloppy. You could tell throughout the entire fight that Lawler was just worried about covering high and looking for an opening. He actually even said before the fight that his gameplan was to "Hold my hands high and try not to get run over" or something along those lines. I don't think that he anticipated the leg kicks being quite so brutal though. I am sure they also had a fallback plan of taking Manhoef down as he got wild too... but that went out the window as soon as Lawler's lead leg was turned into mashed potatoes.

 

Lawler won the fight and approached the fight the only way he could.

He knew that Mel would try and smash his legs to bits and try and land a knee if he went for a takedown.

He also knew that he had to tuck up big time while Mel was punching, but that Mel could be caught and finsihed by one punch if if he could time it right and catch Mel during one of his brutal bursts of punches.

Robbies gameplan was to wether the storm and land a fight ending punch of his own if he saw an opening.

Mel should have won this fight but he got too eager and this is what Robbie was counting on.

I'm not suprised at all by what happened and I was worried that this would happen.

The way both guys fouught was exactly what I expected tbh.

You're definitely not the only one. WAY too rangy and too great of a counter-striker for Manhoef. Manhoef would only get inside if Anderson let him in there, and if he was let inside... it would only lead to him being brutalized by way of Muay Thai Clinch. I doubt it would come to that though, because as I already mentioned... Silva's length and accurate striking would be too much for Manhoef from the outside.

 

i think he did plan it actually, after robbie got hit with the hook at the start of the fight he acted like he was hurt to lure him in but melvin didnt fall for it, which shows he wanted melvin to open up.

and in the after fight interview robbie said he knew melvin drops his hands when he goes to finish.

 

Anderson would not disect Manhoef on his feet, he could well stop him and infact really probably would stop him with mma gloves on, but I doubt a guy who can repeatly go the distance with a kick boxer of Remy Bonjaskeys ability would get disected by anybody including Anderson Silva.

 

If getting his ass kicked before catching Manhoef was the plan then I agree but I doubt his plan was to be limping after the fight.

 

No game plan. Lawler was getting schooled when he threw caution to the wind and let one fly. Manhoff wins rematch quickly. Luck was on lawler's side.
