Was Robin Reid Joe Calzaghe's toughest opponent?

eubank was still a good fighter but i think its fair to say that he lost that killer instinct after the watson tragedy. still a very good win for calzaghe, and a very under-rated one these days as well.

 

Yeah he did lose his killer instinct a bit and probably could have finished off Collins in the first fight but it just pisses me off how Collins never seems to get the praise he deserves for beating Eubank. He was simply better on the night. Im not even Irish before you ask.

 

Nigel Benn is my all time favourite fighter.
I've noticed he's yours to.
But your continuous efforts to denigrate Eubank is getting a little bit tiresome.
He was preparing to fight at cruiserweight, before he got the call to take on Calzaghe. He was past his best (depite his subsequent wars with Thompson), & quite possibly weight drained.
To state 'he was simply beaten by better fighters' is incredibly disingenuous.
And of course fighters can be a spent force by the time they hit 28.

Yeah it was, he fought from the 4th (I think) with only one hand, his right, and still chalked up a 120-107 - 120-108 -120-108 UD

 

Nah, Eubank. Not at his best, but: concrete chin, moved very well and covered up very well, huge right hands from nowhere, bruising bodyshots.

Eubank retired remember in '95 and was kind of forgotten before this. He took the fight on about a weeks notice, carrying a knee injury and losing 20lbs. SKY made him top of the bill, much to Naz's annoyance! But it was Calzaghe who nearly stole the show.

 

Woah you're getting me all wrong I rate Eubank and I think he was a better fighter than Benn, definitely. But I cant help but feel he didnt fight the best fighters of his generation yet he still gets praised like the almighty Allah for some reason, I simply feel he wasnt past his best for the Collins fight and he was beaten by a better fighter, is that so outrageous? Not for this forum surely. I think his performances when he went up to face Thompson at cruiserweight prove he was still a very good fighter and they came over two years after his second fight with Collins. So I really dont see the problem with what I'm saying.

If you like him fine but thats just my opinion on him and the situation at the time. I certainly dont try to be biased or denigrate a fighter for no apparent reason.

Its true though, he certainly had more natural talent and could have made more of himself, maybe thats why I'm so hard on him.

Fair enough, go in the thread about Benn, I give him a glowing assessment there and give Eubank a bit more stick over the Collins fights, you cant have it both ways.

 

Look in all seriousness they are both heroes of mine.
Benn, Eubank, Naz, Rhodes, Reid, Francis ... all of 'em.
Just loved Benn that little more.

No worries, I've had much worse directed towards me, you can believe that. I remember the Eubank thread I made a few months ago was probably a bit harsh and to post it in the British forum was unquestionably a mistake but I'd come in after a few beers and was feeling annoyed about an overly enthusiastic Eubank fan saying he'd beat all and sundry but I'm not really a hater or anything. You a fan of Herol? A tragedy he never won a world title. We had some quality boxers then.
