This is almost tantamount to "where were you?" questions regarding the JFK assassination and 9-11 for die hard boxing fans, so I ask...did you watch the fight live? What were your thoughts? As for me, I was 10 years old. I didn't watch it live...but I was a boxing fanatic even at that young age, and I remember reading about it the newspaper the next day, and being very, very disappointed...I may have even cried. Even back then, HBO showed the fights for free the following weekend, and that was when I got to see it for the first time. Me and my family were trying to come up with every excuse for why Tyson lost - especially the infamous "ref cheated" theory. To this very day, I still believe that theory has some credibility. The ref was incompetent as far as his count when Douglas was down in the 8th. Had another ref - namely, Richard Steele - been there that night, it's almost a given that Douglas would have been counted out, regardless of if he deserved to be or not.
i was only 9 and my dad hated Tyson and watched all his fights hoping he'd lose so I of course was on my dads bandwagon and we had a great night.
Too young to know it was happening. But even now its a monumental moment, sent shockwaves through the boxing world which are still felt today.
yes i put it right up there with the presidents assassination too! little known fact: the great tony tubbs did in fact drug the iron one beforehand for stealing his 6 week atkins diet plan! and the holyfield losses! well u can blame al qaeda for them!
Tysons will always be one of the sports most important figures. And im meeting him in a few weeks at a "night with mike tyson" in birmingham. Get in!!
I was also 10 at the time..I just remember how the Japanese crowd showed hardly no emotion whatsover. Just imagine the crowd reaction if that fight would have been in Vegas or New York. I was definitely shocked at the outcome of fight. At that time, I thought Tyson to be the most industructible force on the planet. I guess you can trace that as the beginning of my lesson on how styles makes fight. Buster's jab would have always given Tyson fits
Tyson fed off the jab. Douglas wouldda just kept giving him opportunities to get inside every time he threw a jab. If tyson had actually trained he wouldda killed douglas like he did the rest.
Watching it with a girlfriend. I was young . I think I wanted to cry. I have never seen a more shocking loss. Big losses dont bother anymore. That was the pinnacle.
I was 21. As a boxing insider, I was actually waiting for somebody to kick Tyson's ass. He was losing his mind, his drive, and what made him great. I thought it was gonna be Holyfield who took his 0, and Douglas was gonna hang around as best he could and succumb in around the 4th. I was absolutely stunned, but I remember being insanely proud of Douglas. Proof that on any given night, a competent boxer with good skills and a big heart can tame even the most vicious of Lions. Btw, the referee could have speed counted to 10 pro wrestling style, and Buster still would have gotten up. He was clearly staying down taking his time. Didn't effect the outcome of the fight at all: You go by the referee's count, as a fighter. You are not accountable if it is slow or fast, if you are up before 10, you are up. Period.
I WAS 22 at my then house, drinking beer, and loving every minute of the fight:smoke.. Douglas was amazing considering he just lost his mom... Great great fight, i love upsets:good:yep:hi::rasta
What do you mean you think you were 9? You know what year your were born...this fight was in February 11th, 1990...do the math man! I had actually just turned 10 on the 5th. I guess we are roughly the same age.
