There were a lot of dreadful opponents but he doesn't seem to get as much stick as some for it. Back to the fight,very impressive from RJJ and a hell of alot of heart from Woods.
I find Tarver v Woods harder to watch because Woods just didnt turn up. Didnt do himself any credit in that fight. At least he came away with dignity from the Jones fight. Agree with the sentiment though, complete mismatch as it turned out.
I think he gets a fair amount of stick for it. It's even brought up in this video by the commentators as you mentioned But it has to be put in context, its only criticized because this is Roy Jones Jr we're talking about and everybody knows his ability was just insane. People expect godly things from a godly fighter and the consistency in his competition is lacking. Yes there was a lot of trash. But some that were decent that were made to look ****, like Clinton Woods. And he still has those wins over Hopkins and Toney, two future HOF'ers to fall back on. As well as a 4 weight world champ, voted fighter of the decade in the 90's by boxing writers. It's not too shabby.
That wasn't really hard to watch in a brutal sense, it was harder to not fall asleep. Horrible fight in all aspects, Tarver was dreadful too. Tarver pitched a near shut out and still managed to provide a bad performance which summed that fight up.
Woods has got to be the toughest British boxer since Tommy Farr. How much 'extra' help was RJJ on at that point?
Woods is a great boxer... Always very much under peoples radar... Went out with dignity against RJJ...:yep The Tarver fight was painful all ends up, dreadful by both contestants...:barf I think that with the poor training camp that Woods had he should have pulled out and not took the fight at that time...hindsight is a wonderful thing...:yep
Jones was at his best here - and I dont care he a fought a few tomatoe cans like PoliceMan / Part time club fighter Rick Frazier. The manner in which Jones outclassed his rivals wether they be a Aussie Binman in Glenn Kelly or a Modern Great in James Toney. Jones made them all look inferior. He was the best pound for pound fighter on the planet. Its the same as Calzaghe who fought loads of bums defending the WBO - but he was still the best fighter at 168LBS. As he proved later on. As for Roy Jones setroid abuse. As far as I am aware he only tested postive for Steroids after the Eric Harding fight. But in a twist - Eric Harding was found postive of steroids too. So both fighters were on something that night.
But didn't Jones take Ripped Fuel? That's something you could even buy at normal health store in the uk?
No shame in Woods performance to Jones who was clearly the best of a generation. I don't really count the Tarver fight for Woods as he had meningitis but didn't find out till after the fight!
