Unfortunately, I am not. I have the issue at home somewhere. Here's the list. http://boxing.about.com/od/history/a/ring_80_best.htm
It was not water and honey.......Luis Resto the fighter Panama Lewis took the paddings off his gloves and then went to jail for......has come clean on the matter. Resto's own words were that Panama Lewis mixed a medicinal concoction in a water bottle and gave his fighers that to open up their breathing tubes as needed. Resto's own words were that as soon as you took a dose of it, your lungs opened right up and you could breathe. ........Against Arguello, the camera's caught Panama Lewis asking for the bottle he had mixed on at least 2 occasions......and there was likely more...... Right before the 14th round Panama Lewis makes stink, "give me that bottle, not that one, the one I mixed.........Pryor who had looked weakened during the 13th round as Arguello was stepping it up, then gets off his stool a refreshed fighter and tears right into Arguello. I had always suspected that Pryor was a cheat, and on several occassions throughout the years had let it be known in this very forum...... .....but now, in light of Luis Resto's testimony and Emmanuel Steward statement of what Pryor had told him prior to the Arguello rematch, you've really got to be a complete moron to not put 2 and 2 together and come to the conclusion that Aaron Pryor was a piece of **** cheat!
i think it's the best 80 of the last 80 years list so he's too old i guess but pryor ahead of hearns is a odd...pryor ahead of hearns by THAT much is ****ing ridiculous pryor-cervantes, arguello x2 hearns-cuevas, duran, benitez, hill, "draw" leonard there's really not much to compare. i love the **** out of pryor but his resume is ****ing bare for someone so talented
Yeah, but Boxrec rated 'Greb' in the top-10 and he last fought in 1926... No mention of "Johnson or Ketchel." Something stinks about that list.... :deal MR.BILL
:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl There is nothing allowed other than plain water. Vargas was not allowed to have gatoraide. He was caught on tape asking for a mixed bottle. You arent allowed to have a mixed anything period. So we know for a fact he had something he was not allowed to have. You choose to be naive and believe that it was something that wouldnt be performance enhancing.... but why take the risk of breaking the rules for no reward? The guy is an old pro he aint taking a risk and breaking the rules just to give his fighter sugar water. For the risk he is going to give his guy something that offers a reward, that is just common sense.
Tszyu couldn't be arsed being disciplined with Phillips and Hatton, choosing to fight their fight to prove a point. The point he proved was that relentless pressure fighters are all wrong for him. Pryor wouldn't let him even think about it. Tzsyu won't be able to get full extension on his punches, and Pryor had a great chin anyway. Pryor SHOULD beat any version of Tszyu.
Tony Canzoneri behind fighting harada and salvador sanchez? i love the **** out of them both but no. that list is messed up
Cervantes was definitely past it by the time of their fight (a solid, but not spectacular win), a lot more than Arguello anyway. Yes, Alexis was above his prime weight, but he was still an excellent fighter and put up as good an effort as he possibly could've in their first fight. That first matchup took a lot out of him though, which showed in the rematch. Excellent wins (moreso the first) regardless IMO, depending on how much credence you put into the whole "black bottle" fiasco. That could certainly hinder your perception of the man and the win. As to the question, I wouldn't say he achieved enough to be considered truly great, but I think in his prime he'd have been a handful and then some for almost any fighter that ever fought from 135-140. I think at that time he had all the makings of a great fighter. The fact that he didn't live up to his potential is on him.
The list was made in 2002 I believe, therefore the years from 1922 on would be considered. There are a lot of inconsistencies in it, regardless.
from what I understand, boxrec lists are created by a mathematical formula that sometimes gives very strange results. Re the thread: No. Without cheating, Pryor is ****. WITH cheating, he's just a piece of ****.
I would put Pryor in this class of All Time Greats at 140 lbs. Pryor Pacquiao Mayweather Duran Benetiz Whitaker Ross Chavez Armstrong
I know I thought Pryor looked shitty against Gary Hinton in 1985........ Pryor was rusty as a nail and more hittable than ever before.... Pryor got the decision based on his name more so than anything else.... After the '83 smoking of Alexis Arguello, Aaron Pryor just lost all focus on boxing and began sniffing Coke left and right...... He was never the same..... A few years later, I recall seeing Saoul Mamby Kayoing Hinton on the USA network in the late 1980s..... Mamby's win was considered an upset...... Hinton just faded away after that loss...... MR.BILL
