Who's your pick? Prime Roy Jones vs. Chad Dawson at 175

i believe "prime" was the operative word. that version of rjj was nowhere near his prime

 

Can't really say because Dawson is still Boxing in his prime and peaking. A few years down the line we may get an answer.

 

"Got his ass kicked" WTF were you watching? It was a close fight and he pulled it off, Dawson showed massive heart and then gave Glen Johnson a rematch and that really was an ass kicking.

Why the hell is it always when a high profile fighter wins a close fight he automatically "gets his ass kicked?" Dawson beating Johnson (I), Mayweather beating Castillo (I) Hatton beating Collazo, Berto beating Collazo, Froch beating Dirrell, Williams beating Martinez, the list goes on and on and on.

Jones always struggled with Southpaws, see the Harding and Tarver fights. I think it will be a tough, competitive fight. Dawson is much better than any southpaw that Jones has ever faced and struggled with so its not altogther impossible to see Dawson winning on points.

 

I had him winning both fights with Johnson, both by UD. If you are going to use that kind of logic then you are going to have to take into account that Jones was dropped and stunned by a journeyman southpaw called Lou de Valle, who I'm sure Dawson hits harder than.

 

I see a lot of suggestions for Roy Jones Jr by KO. Without getting too into detail, I'm just going to ask how? In his prime at LHW, Roy Jones Jr's power was somewhat overstated against quality opposition. He has one major KO that he holds onto, a big time knock out over Montel Griffin. A shot Mike McCallum went 12 full rounds with RJJ, Otis Grant took a beating but Roy Jones didn't KO him (Grant's people put a stop to what I'm sure was an eventual TKO). This doesn't even begin to address the fact that he didn't KO guys like David Telesco, Louie Del Valle, Reggie Johnson and was spared the embarrassment of not stopping a guy like Richard Hall with a 12th round mercy stoppage by Hall's corner. Even if you're arguing that Roy Jones Jr DOES have the power to KO somebody, you're understating how good Dawson recovers. Furthermore you're forgetting how quickly Roy Jones Jr took his foot off the gas.

Roy Jones Jr also liked to take his foot off the pedal from time to time and coast. After McClellan, Roy openly talked about not wanting to see another boxer go through that. Roy Jones Jr went through some sort of boxing Ghandi stage where he didn't want to get hurt and at the same time, didn't want to hurt anybody. I figure that when you consider all of that, there's a good chance Roy decisions Dawson cleanly...but a slim chance he'd actually KO him outright.

 

Jones would knock Dawson out.

 

Jones had more than enough power and speed to knock Dawson out. I'm not sold on Dawson's chin. Excellent fighter though. This would be man VS boy after some good rounds.

 

Jones has the speed and power to knock Dawson out.

 

Virgil Hill? I agree with the point, however. Jones could crack at the weight, but he was by no means the puncher (or overall fighter, IMO) at LHW as he was at lower weights.

 

WITH A BODY SHOT!

Jones had power but to me a KO suggests some semblance of one punch knock out ability. Roy had that at MW and SMW but at LHW it never showed up outside of the insane body shot he laid onto Virgil Hill.

I could see Jones knocking him down but I also have way too many memories of Roy Jones JR knocking a fighter down early, outclassing him and then spending the rest of the fight occasionally throwing half hearted power shots and choosing to spend his free time on the ropes laughing at how overmatched his opposition was.

I'm sticking with a 8-4 type decision win for Jones. Maybe he knocks down Dawson (in fact, you can say he probably does) but I figure he'll ease up off the pedal and coast the rest of the way.

 

Jones would have his hands full with Dawson,Dawson is probably more technically sound than anyone Jones ever fought, although you could argue Toney,plus Dawson is a left hander with range & speed,a guy who uses the jab well to.

I would pick Dawson FTW if Jones does not KO him which is a possibility given Dawson's whiskers.
