Yes Williams has the physical tools, but he lacks the Boxing brain to maximize them.

I personally thought he beat Martinez legitimately but he did look back to his poorest after a good display against Wink.

Defensive holes were even on show against the likes of Verno Phillips not just Martinez, Margarito, Quintana.

The guy is a beast. He is top 10 p4p in my eyes. I think he would definitely beat Pac and most likely beat Mayweather but neither will fight him. He isn't unbeatable but he beats everyone at welter imo. His is not insanely skilled but he has amazing toughness and work rate. He is a great fighter to watch.

I find it funny that people ***** about him fighting at welter saying he is too big. News flash for you, if you can make the weight you have every right compete.

There is only a couple of fighters in the LW and MW divisions that can rumble with him and stand a chance. Pavlik's power would probably be too much for him but it would be a great fight.

He's exciting as hell, is damn good at multiple weights, and I'm not going to lie, that he's a black American fighter makes it easier for people to hype him. People can get angry that threads like this exist or that threads calling him overrated are out there, but most outlets rate him ridiculously high whereas if he was an Asian or European fighter with the exact same record and accomplishments, he'd be nowhere near as regarded right now.

If Floyd and Pac both retire after their next fights, is Paul the best fighter in boxing? Of course not. And that's how the media's overrating him right now. Does it mean he's not worth rooting for or that I'll ever regret watching a Paul Williams fight? Not by any stretch of the imagination. A fighter can both be overrated and very good, overhyped and exciting.

The trick is to not let some people overrating/hyping him make you hold it against the fighter themselves.

If you really think about it, it's not that far fetched. I figure nobody really thinks either May or Pac can beat him at 147 including the fighters themselves. If Paul can defeat Pac wouldn't that make him a P4P king? The concept of P4P is based on opinion so there really is no right or wrong answer unless you have Bobby instead of Manny at #1.

What hype? For a guy who beat Margarito who was very highly thought off and had a close one with a top 3 lmw, there isn't that much hype.

I remember Williams being hyped by HBO back in 1995. They were saying that he would be very difficult to beat at 147, and that he had potential to be a champ even at 168. That was before I had even seen any of his fights, and I wanted to know what the hype was about. I saw the Matthysse and Mitchell fights and was very impressed. The only thing I didn't like was that he would give up his height and brawl with much shorter fighters consistently.

When he was Margo's mandatory and really wanted a shot at the title, I knew that Margo would have all kinds of problems with him. When Williams began to step up against more skilled fighters though, some weaknesses became more apparent, but that didn't stop the hype. Also that "Most Feared" fighter thing was anoying, just like in Margarito's case.

Williams is definitely a very good fighter, even though some people get carried away with the hype. He is not the most skilled or tecnhical fighter out there but, he trains and fights very hard. I appreciate what he brings to boxing, and enjoy his fights.

PS. I don't have that much respect for his trainer though. They are not using all of Williams' tools properly, IMO.

The only thing some people don't like about Paul is that he makes their boys look bad because they won't fight him.

He's willing to fight guys with belts or guys with a high stature then he has, whether the title shot is deserved or not. Pretty much all fighters want to fight guys with belts or bigger names. I like Williams, but he's fooled a lot of people into thinking he's something he really isn't.

He fought Margarito IN A TITLE FIGHT. Most fighters jump at that opportunity.

Winky is a huge name and was very inactive.

As for Martinez...no one? Really? Cintron just fought him before. Pav's fighting him next. Face it, you just bought into the hype. Go ****in cry elsewhere...
