Just a bad night at the Office or He Just Got it Damn Wrong

Cotto/Clottey would be right near the top competing with Hatton. At least Hatton can say despite his reckless and questionable tactics that he was outclassed and believed he was the bigger man, no matter how stupid that sounds now many people believed the same at the time.

What can you say about Clottey? He had that damn fight in the bag, it was very nip and tuck. He had all the strength in the world and Cotto was backing up and running, clearly on his last legs. Clottey proceeds to throw 5 punches a round and lets a zombiefied Cotto pinch enough rounds :barf:-(

Looks very good, but flatters to decieve when it really counts.

That was just plain unexplainable. He let in a comical own goal that night...Cotto had **** all and Clottey looked relatively fresh.

Not completly tactically inept. Inept not a word you'd use with these 2. But does anyone think the fight may of played out different had Hagler not persisted in fighting out of an orthadox stance against Leonard.

Leonard would have beaten Hagler 10 times out of 10. He was simply too skilled and clever for Hagler to cope with.

 

I agree. But just feel he could of made things a lot more awkward for Leonard doing what he did best.

Nope. Hagler was past his best. And didn't make things any easy for himself by arsing around in orthodox for the first few rounds.

Leonard stole that fight, fair enough, showed his intelligence. But he waited for the wars to catch up with Hagler IMO.

Styles may indeed make fights, but time was what really helped Leonard win the decision in my opinion.

 

A decent read about the many years of calculated timing and build up to this fight is a book by Steve Marantz called "Sorcery At Ceasar's". Be warned, the author's biased and less than favourable opinions on Leonard are plainly obvious, but nonetheless it is an interesting read and looks at how Leonard engineered it for many years so that when they finally did meet in 1987, it was to the best advantage he would get.
