What is the most highly skilled boxing match you've ever seen?

Buchanan/Laguna I think might be a better choice - more boxing and less one man running over another man.

 

Chavez/Taylor is a showcase of some fantastic infighting, with a dramatic finish as well (though the ending might put people off the sport...).

 

It is a really good fight, I think it is quality. Lewis really shows how good of a fighter he was but unfortuantly so does Napoles.

Definitly, again one of my favrouites I forgot about. The first 10 rounds is a close tactical and technical fight, the last 5 are a gritty showing.

I like Rose's fight with Sakurai better than the Castillo fight.

 

My choice would be DLH v Mosley 1. It's a great fight, exciting and also you can showcase a peak Mosley and explain he's still going and fighting floyd in a few months, should then be able to drag them to yours for that one as well and you will have them hooked.

 

Gilberto Roman vs Santos Laciar II.

It's a shame that the fight ended anti-climatically because the 11 rounds of boxing you do get to watch is great to watch from both men. Damn shame, that.

Yeah, both Watanabe Poonterat fights are very nice technically.

 

I think archie Moore vs yvon durelle is good example of the use of pure boxing skills - and the difference between that and just being a brutal puncher - plus it's got that knock-down-drag-out rocky movie feel to keep the excitement high too - but yeah some serious skills on show from archie Moore in that one for sure ;-)

 

But Mayweather/De La Hoya will have them on their feet. Right....

 

I like Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns in 1981. Finding openings. Give and take.

 

Hearns Benitez was also another one. Benitez, Leonard. That generation had some great technical boxers.

 

Technically speaking,that fight was wonderful.Your comments nailed it perfectly.I was at the Garden and was on for Buddy as he's from New York.Even though I was disappointed in the result,I couldn't help but thinking that those 2 were pure pugilists.

 

Toney-McCallum 1 is definitely up there among my favorite highly skilled boxing matches.

But if you want to show someone that it's not about power and aggression, maybe you should show these fights.

Not all of the losers were big punchers (Diaz is rather featherfisted), but in these cases, all of the aggressive fighters who were on the frontfoot more than their opponents were beaten by skillful counterpunching/boxing and better defense. And all were entertaining fights too.

Not as skillful as many fights named before but definitely shows the casual viewers that boxing is more than just mere aggression and power.

 

atsch Beat me to it that is the first one i thought of, and one of my favorite fights, as far as watching 2 skilled fighters with outstanding skills. Also Whittaker- Delahoya. Leija-Nelson II. Theres a lot more off the top of my head.
I would have loved to seen Kid Gavilan and Sugar Ray Robinson, been watching alot of the Kid lately his fights with Janiro,Graham,Turner,Davey,Basillo i cant think of too many other 2 highly skilled fighters going at it than Robinson-Gavilan. others

Watson vs Benn, which was only mentioned once, is a great call. Every second of it is exciting, Benn is the ultimate fighter that fits their mold of the furious ex-con who should win it, while Watson displays great skill and remains calm under fire.

I've actually stopped showing my friends boxing matches a long time ago. You either like it or you don't. I hate it when show a great fight and they can't see it for what it is, plus they will make stupid statements and nothing you say can change their mind about those statements. In case i sound frustrated: it's because i am. :twisted:
