Andre Ward is without doubt one of the most intelligent and talented young fighters in the business but what struck me when rewatching his fight against Kessler was how much he reminded me of Bernard Hopkins... ...the ring-generalship, the gamesmanship, the change of pace, the posturing, the setting up of traps, even the footwork and balance reminded me of "X". What is more, Ward seems to have modelled himself on Hopkins, which says a lot more for him than if it had all been a coincidental resemblance. And when you think that Ward is only 26... ...he has got all the physical and technical tools to become a great fighter, but the fact that he is so intelligent, so tactically proficient and seemingly so willing to do whatever it takes to win makes him a likely future hall-of-famer. Anyone else see similarities between Ward and Hopkins?
I definately see the similarities between the two. Most notably the way throws a shot, and immediately follows it up by charging forward to clinch (or a headbutt ). Not saying it's a bad thing, but it's definately an effective strategy, one that helps preserve energy and upset the rythem of the opposing fighter. A very intelligent fighter, and one that I'm predicting to go on and win the Super Six.
Also he's almost impossible to hit with a flush powershot. That's why B-Hop has had so much success against one-punch-at-a-time offensive fighters like Tarver and Pavlik. Ward is going to win the Super Six (I predicted that before he fought Kessler), but the one guy who stands a chance at beating him is Arthur Abraham, whose punches are just too difficult to dodge. AA throws punches from odd angles and he eats up defensive fighters who move away from him.
He seems wise for someone his age. If he keeps up his level of discipline then he can have a long career like Hopkins but his glory was captured in his 20's not 30's. I'm not going as far as to call Ward a future HOF but I like seeing his career progress as he is a smart dude. I guess that little speech Floyd gave him helped.
Hopkins :huhI see more of a mix beteween Jones and MW I don't see how you can compare him Bhops ..But hey to each is own ..
But Abraham doesn't have a great inside game and Ward is very good at keeping the fight at the range that suits him. If that means taking it inside, he can do it. And he can beat Abraham on the inside - his defence is good enough and he is strong and durable enough.
Superficially, but Ward doesn't have anything near the extraordinary technical proficiency of Hopkins or his old school footwork, balance, feinting, defence and perfect straight right hand. They have some similar habits. Thing is, you can't really pin Hopkins down into a specific stylistic category, so it's difficult to compare another guy to him. We'll see how Ward develops.
He reminds me more of a poor mans Roy Jones stylistically, with some of Hopkins' dirty tricks. Hop had a lot more depth to his game and more subtle tricks.
Superficially? How can someone resemble someone as idiosyncratic as Hopkins in a superficial way, without having learned very well from him or without doing a very bad, ineffective impression of him? To give a good impression of Hopkins, like Ward does, you must have genius. Ward is 26. He has had 21 fights. When Hopkins was 26/when he had 21 fights, he wasn't as good as Ward is now. Ward learned from Hopkins. If he can learn from Hopkins, he can learn from anyone. Hopkins could not fight like anyone but himself. Ward can. He promises to achieve greater things than Hopkins has because his potential is greater.
he also reminds me of mosley, you know how they use balco or former balco employees, as a part of their set up:yep all the african americans or whatever you want to be called now, who where so quickly to point fingers at pac, why didnt you point fingers at ward..?:hey
He reminds me more of Roy Jones with his speed and footwork. I dont see too much of Hopkins in him. Roy was a pretty smart fighter too.
Future top pound for pounder, if he can continue to fight as he did against Kessler. High ring IQ, high athletic ability, etc..
