Going against the grain here, loved the narrative but 'Don't give up' by Kate Bush & Peter Gabriel ffs!! Should be 'Your the best' by Joe Esposito, would gave the vid a whole new feel.:yep
This finally got posted on youtube, huh? I remember seeing it years and years ago as part of ESPN's sports century countdowns for greatest athletes of the 20th century and it used to make me break down then. And it's still tremendously sad and also a little uplifting at the same time. It's good to see it again. God bless and be with Muhammad Ali.
Biggest inspiration in my life. Turned me onto boxing and taught me the biggest star in the history of sports wasn't produced by endorsement deals or media. He shone through in spite of them.
I hated him then, hate him now. Phony *******, hipocrite, and liar. Phony for sayinghe was Black Muslim, and so religous, yet cheating on wife, going with White women---which HE said was against his priciples, Hippocrite for attacking others while doing same, and Liar for such things as saying he threw away his Gold Medal from Olympics due to racsim, which was shown not to be true many years later, after story wa salready considered part of his history. He also in 1975 said White's and Blacks can't mix, made fun of babies they would produce (On Howard Cosell special from Deer Lake Pa. training camp, ABC televison special) He said White people were devils. He called Frazier a Gorilla. He knew Liston threw fight but claimed he ko'd him. A piece of **** till day he dies.
His 3 year layoff was no layoff, he was in training camp, had dundee setting up exhibitions, and stayed sharp. Dodged draft and got away with it. **** him.
That first quote was horribly ******ed. That's really the only thing Ali had with "other fighters"? I want to find that guy, and hit him with a phone book. A phone book filled with marbles.
"No champ. I'm going to meet God and tell him I know you." A dieing kid is wise well beyond his years...... I really think even more than his accomplishments in the ring its those types of moments that must ring in Ali's mind. That quote was really moving, and it magnifies just how legend Ali was to alot of people, young and old.
As much as I agree that alot of what you say is true and what he did to Frazier still casts a shadow over Ali to this day in my eyes, to label him a piece of **** is a bit harsh. He was human and flawed like all of us but what he achieved was incredible and a inspiration to many. His stance on the Vietnam war showed truly what type of man he was. I wish all men thought like him on this. Maybe we wouldnt have innocent kids and families being torn apart in Iraq if they did. He did great things but also some bad things which im sure he's aware of and regrets to this day. Video did move me.
