Its probably to late and the era is to weak. So many absolutely true greats in front of him.

But Im really digging Gamboa, really want to see him in with tougher opp.

    They were. :bbb

Just to give you an idea, recently they did a " all time best welterweight list " and Cuba had 3 in the top 7 in that category! Gavilan, Napoles and Rodriguez !!!

That says a lot about them, taking into consideration that Tito Trinidad was in the # 28-30 spot of all time best!

The other Cuban phenom " Kid Chocolate ", was the first to capture Cuba's first World Title, was undefeated in like 50 or 60 fights, fought the absolute best of Hall of Famers and still came out on top!

But Gamboa has a " very good chance " of passing all the Cuban greats, as he pocesses blazing hand speed, nasty KO power, unmatched amateur experience and dedication...Also, keep an eye on the other Cuban Beast from Oriente, Guillermo Rigondeaux... :good

    Here we go again... :-(

Not that many to choose from " since Cuba has been missing in action since 1959 ", unlike like Puerto Rico who has been " free forever to compete in any professional sport "...

Secondly, even though that our list is only composed of about only 9 or 10 World Champs, 4 or 5 are considered " All time greats and Hall of Famers "... So, the bar is definitely " very high ". Just watch some documentaries about Gavilan, Napoles and Rodriguez and you will see why...

Why do Boricuas always " get offended when we speak of Cuba's accomplishments in sports "??? :huh

In either case, PR's should " support us " and not be against us, you should be like my Boricua friend " Zaryu ", a very humble and brother of all Cubanos!!! :good

I agree. Casamayor did a lot for Cuba. He was the first Cuban defector to win a World Title ( in the US as Gomez was World Champion before him in Germany ). Joel proved that Cuban amateurs can also be World Champions and Joel in his prime was really " a Brush " like he called himself. He beat many good ones, including Corrales ( 3 times, the second one was a robbery ), he also beat undefeated Robert Garcia, Nate Campbell, undefeated David Santos, undefeated Jon Kwok Baek, beat Freitas ( in my opinion ) and also castillo in my opinion. In his older days he managed to KO'd Michael Katsidis in spectacular fashion but later got stopped for the first time in his career by Marquez due to old age...

Casamayor was a " solid 2 times World Champ " who defended his WBA 5 straight times but when it counted the most " to unify " he failed, whether by " robbery " or whatever it still is a lost in the books...

This is where Yuriorkis sets himself apart from Casamayor " or any other ". Gamboa has that " 1 shot KO power, and that spectacular hand speed that Casamayor lacked, combined with " better amateur accomplishments than Joel ", and is more " physically talented than Casamayor "...

All Cubanos are proud of Casamayor, but Gamboa will leave him " galaxies away " in terms of professional accomplishments!!! :scaredas:

I am very sure that a prime Casamayor would have been KO'ed by Gamboa... :good

    Why?

I have seen Gavilan, Napoles, Rodriguez and Chocolate in video and believe me, Gamboa is way faster than all of them and possibly hits harder than all of them too, add to that his " incredible " amateur accomplishments and you have a " Hall of fame caliber Champion "...

Never underestimate a unique talent like Gamboa... :good

Bottom line, the competition isn't there, even if he cleans house in 3 divisions.

Wins over fighters such as JuanMa Lopez, John, Rigondeaux, Linares, Soto, Martinez, Valero, or whoever isnt going to push him past Jose Napoles, Luis Rodriguez, or Kid Gavilan. Not by a long shot. Those guys proved their worth vs. the very best in the history of the sport. There's no such fighter out there around Gamboa's weight class to prove it - and while he may be faster than those guys and have true 1 shot KO power, he doesn't have nearly the skills.

Watching Napoles fight and watching Gamboa afterwards...CLEAR AS DAY how much of a difference in class there is.

Don't overrate Gamboa. He could wind up great and I'm rooting for him to do so. He has some awesome strengths, but expecting him to reach Gavilan/LR/Napoles status will only leave you disappointed.

    And who is JuanMa? :huh

Beating JuanMa will not be " out of this World accomplishment for Gamboa ", trust me on this one. It will mark a " new beginning for him " but that will not make him an " all time great ". Many people will start to see him like one but there are other great battles for him ahead like Chris John, Caballero, Rigondeaux etc...

I am not trying to put JuanMa down, just saying that JuanMa is not a " monster fighter " or nothing like that, he has many many flaws and has looked " very vurnerable " already ( Mtagwa fight )...

JuanMa also has to " prove himself " in fighting a solid Champion like John, Caballero or Gamboa... :good

^ That's the thing though. Even if he follows up a JuanMa win with Chris John, Cab, and Rigondeaux, along with some other top fighters at 126-130, his resume will still fall miles short.

I think so guys the guy will go down as an ATG if he can beat Juanma, Caballero, John, Juarez...Gillermo Redo and the rest!

Maybe go up to 130 and 135 and do the same.

He sure has the talent to make it.

First he's gotta get past Barros. Everybody overlooks this guy, but Gamboa & Co better find some footage or he'll might have to find out from the deck that Barros is no "Argentinean brawler" (Top Rank), but a pretty solid boxer.

You could say the same thing about Zab Judah in comparison to them, except for the punching power bit. Neither Zab nor Gamboa hit harder than Napoles. Either way, listing the edge he holds in purely physical categories like speed does absolutely no justice to defining an all time great. Especially when you're comparing him to fighters like Napoles and Rodriguez; guys whose efficiency was never reliant on their speed.

I understand your points. But it's not Gamboa's fault that he does'nt have competition. If he cleans house and no one is capable of beating him then he is an all time great! And believe me, there are always very good tough opposition " in pro boxing...

For me it's actually the opposite, I have watched Napoles, Gavilan and Rodriguez and Gamboa is way more " spectacular, fast and power ful than the three combined "... :good
