How many fighters have become big American draws without speaking English? Both Pacquiao and Cotto started to draw much better once they no longer needed to speak through the aid of a translator. It means they can actually market themselves. Can't do that if you don't speak the language. Some Mexicans have been able to do it, but that's about it, and it makes sense since there are about 25 million Mexicans living in the US.

Plus, if it wasn't apparent, I was talking about who could become a big draw in America. Abraham is already a big draw in other places, for instance, as are Khan and Haye. But take a look at what actually sells in the US.

 

A couple years ago people would have called you crazy if you said Pac could sell 45k PPV's against Josh Clottey, and now he's doing that just at the gate.

Things change quickly. All it takes is a quick string of notable performances and boxers can still get recognized by the general public. At least 1 of the guys at 140 and 168 should emerge over the next 2 years, along with the possibilities of a Klitschko-less HW division down the road.

I also still like the Gamboa = Cuban Tito comparisons. I think if he is kept active in NY, Miami etc. and can successfully move up to LW eventually (and maybe WW longterm) then it's hard to see him not becoming a massive draw with his great skills.

 

The Olympics are coming up. That is normally where the world's next greatest boxers are derived. No other sport is like boxing. It is the only sport that gets their superstars from the Olympics.

I like all of these guys and think they all have potiental to be big stars. We just got to wait and see how their careers play out.

I also like Kirkland too. Hope he gets out soon and gets back to where he left off.

That's because that's the highest level of comp for the sport. Not really a bragging point since we don't have a collegiate pool to draw from like other major sports.

Seriously, though, Gamboa, Ward, Alexander and Berto all are capable.

I don't see Valero, Lara or Khan really accomplishing big things. Paul Williams I really like but I think his promotors have screwed him over. And same with Chad Dawson.

They keep fighting him in Connecticut, but honestly, how much of a fanbase can you have in Hartford?
