The only time i can remember the announcing being that bad or worse was for the de la hoya vs whitaker fight and the hopkins vs trinidad fight. Lampley was all over de la hoyas jock when he was punching air all night and foreman was all over trinidads jock when he was being anhialated from round 1.
Watched the HBO version and the Skysports version, and the Skysports commentators weren't nearly as bad as HBO. Lampley was exaggerating everything Pac did even starting from the damn ringwalks, and minimizing everything Clottey did. It was annoying to everyone and embarrassing to Pac fans. Why can't they just call it like they see it? And Kellerman, wow this guy tries way too hard. Where was Merchant? Manny Stu was the only one halfway decent, trying to call the action as he saw it.
BANG BANG BANG cracks me up. I used to get annoyed from Lampley's theatrics but now I just try to find amusement from them. The fight was disappointing, totally devoid of any drama and close competition, then all of a sudden everyone in the room started laughing at Lampley's rant. They were pretty awful during Chavez-Taylor 1. Totally biased in favor of Taylor, at one point Taylor was flurrying and landing, then Chavez started slipping the shots. Lampley says "Chavez on the verge of going down". Lampley, Merchant, and Foreman would make a funny trio. Often bickering, Foreman just saying ridiculous things to be different from the rest and sometimes pulling rank on Merchant. One of Foreman's most WTF? lines was when he said "no one is pound for pound the best until they beat James Page".
I first watched the fight from sky sports, then rewatched the hbo telecast just to hear lampley lose his mind. Its amazing how different people can call a fight, and how that could affect ones outlook on how the athletes performed.
