i was impress with him in the corner. i believe he has boxing knowledge cotto could use this guy in the future
i made it a point to pay attention to him during this fight. i must say, he is better than i thought he would be.
not yet.. prolly every trainer that will handle Clottey will say the same to him.. "Open up.. take a FKing chance!!"
There was an interesting point before the 3rd started where he told him...okay baby...now we're in a fight. Let's start opening up. It seemed to me, like the whole game plan was to sorta shell up for 2 rounds, then slowly open up and really rev the engine towards the final rounds... I thought DeJesus had the right idea. He seemed like a pretty good trainer. But who knows what he was really made of. Clottey didn't even kickstart the beginning of that ****ing plan so we really don't know what would've came out his mouth had Clottey decided to take some serious chances.
I respect him like every other trainer, but at no point I felt he had the right strategic thinking, nor that Clottey trusted him which is essential. And saying things like "we're losing every round" is the worst thing a fighter actually losing every round could hear. I like his character from the minimal footage and interviews I saw on him, and he could be a good coach one day, but he was not ready for this caliber of a fight and the trainer-fighter chemistry was missing. Maybe I read things wrong.
I think he was saying the right things, but if it were me, I would have been a lot more dramtic about it. Sometimes it takes a good smack in the face and lecture to get a guy fired up. I think Clottey needed a little more motivation. As said, Clottey knew how to do it, just didnt make enough effort.
He did well for a last minute replacement. You can't break a lifetime style of fighting in one 8 week training camp. Look at Pac with Roach. He still continues to remove bad habits and techniques with one of the best boxer right now.
Nah, Atlas lives on a different planets and says things like "you better have your ticket ready because you never know when the conductor is coming" or "he thought he had today's newspaper and had to find out after all the reading he was sold yesterday's edition", maybe "you gotta fill up your den with nuts before the winter is coming or you gonna get caught cold". Now that sounds like Teddy Atlas. :deal
Thats like saying a race car driver is just along for the ride in a race. The trainer in these type of fights can be a huge determining factor and I really dont understand how a fighter can go into a fight of this magnitude without having the best in the game. I know its all about the money, but if I was there to win and not just collect a payday I would go get someone more qualified than a cutman or a cheerleader as in the case of Cotto.
