He had everything served up for him as a fighter...:yep Promoting I imagine involves the chasing, hustling and a different kind of hunger...:think Maybe that's not what he expected...:yep
It was never going to happen. Prodigal son aside Calzaghe hardly knows anything about the sport as demonstrated by a quality prospect like Tony Doherty getting chinned by Geraint Harvey. Rees being completely outclassed by Kotelnik. Pryce failing to watch a video of Mathew Hall and proceeding to stand and trade with him, Enzo getting chinned in seconds by David Haye, then training in a beer cellar for ola afoabi. Also Calzaghe's hands continuously been smashed to pieces because they didn't know how to wrap them properly. I also heard stories about fighters turning up for training and been told to run round a field to warm up only to come back to an empty gym. Great achievements but just how much of it was luck.
Enzo Calzaghe won the 'Ring Magazine' trainer of the year for having a stable full of champs. He was lucky as you say, Enzo Mac got found out against punchers and as you say poor training is too blame, surely Calzaghe snr should of worked on defence and countering? Rees was so soundly beaten it took him over 17mths to come back when really he needed a comeback and a few confidence boosting fights, a long lay off is not good as he hit the booze and blew up in weight, he fought at welter when imo he should be a lw. Pryce is quite simply too ring worn and lacks commitment to make it, and no trainer could improve him. He just comes across as cocky and lazy. Luckily Calzaghe snr had a son who made him look great when indeed it was warren who should of been thanked. The ring magazine matchmaker of the year for sure...
Brown Bomber i have hardly heard of Tony Doherty and just checked boxrec. Good god is taht the most padded record of all time http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=189357&cat=boxer You obviously know he is a good fighter that is not my point. Point being is it the calzaghe stable of great records?
