I Predict Pavlik To Beat Martinez...

Anyone who watched the Williams fight knows that Martinez is not going to sit in front of Pavlik and eat his jab. He's going to use angles and speed to get inside, the same way he got inside on Williams. I can definitely see Martinez catching Pavlik with a big shot and putting him down, perhaps for good. Pavlik's best chances will be in rounds 9-12, when Martinez' age begins to catch up with him and he fades.

 

Paul didn't use his height and reach advantage the whole fight. That fight is pretty meaningless in trying to judge this fight. Kelly comes forward in a much more controlled manner than Paul.

 

Kelly comes straight forward like a predictable robot. That's why Hopkins took him to school so badly.

 

Here we go again. Martinez = Hopkins. Except he is smaller, doesn't have the ring generalship, doesn't have a LHW punch, etc... etc... etc....

 

Stop taking offense like Kelly's your girlfriend. I'm just saying he's predictable, and a fighter like Martinez, who's seasoned, fast, a southpaw, and knows how to use angles and footwork well could pose a big problem for Pavlik. Could I see Pavlik knocking Martinez out late when Martinez fades? Yes, of course. But I could also see Martinez frustrating the hell out of Pavlik, punching him from odd angles and hurting Pavlik.

 

Paul Williams did his best to make Martinez look like a ring master. Cintron was a bit better, but not much. See Doobie's posts where he says Lederman laughed at how inept Cintron was for not taking a step and nailing Martinez. Kelly has a vast amateur career to back up his pro career. He is very disciplined. He won't be making those mistakes against Martinez. Martinez has a 50% KO record at 154 and below. If you can't buy Kelly's respect with your punching power then history shows you better plan on leaving the ring on your back.

Let me make a little list here, and name off some stylistic details. I'm not saying all these guys were better than Martinez. I'm just saying they all did certain things better than Martinez.

Ross Thompson was bigger, stronger, and slicker than Martinez, and he had way better defense. He won one round on one score card, and never fought again.

Fulgencio Zuniga was bigger and stronger than Martinez, and does a technically better job of closing the gap between himself and his opponent. He works behind a good jab moving in and moving out. Martinez rushes in face first, and rushes out with his hands down. Zuniga also hit way harder than Martinez. Pavlik made Zuniga quit on his still at the end of the 9th.

Bronco McKart is kind of a poor man's Winky. He had 3 times the defensive prowess of Martinez. He is also bigger than Sergio and had way more experience against solid opposition. Pavlik handed Bronco his first KO loss in 6 rounds.

Edsison Miranda gave Arthur Abraham his tougheest fight to date, and mangled Arthur's face along the way. Right after that Miranda out boxed Allen Green 97-90, 96-91, 96-91. Pavlik ran right the **** over Miranda.

Jermain Taylor's hand speed was just as good as Sergio's, and he was a hell of a lot bigger than Martinez. He was the undisputed, undefeated, middleweight champion of the world when Pavlik took him out in 7 rounds. Hopkins lost two decisions to JT, and Winky only managed a draw. In Pavlik/Taylor II KP beat JT 116-112. In other words, he succeeded where an all time great, and a sure fire hall of famer failed.

Sergio Martinez brings nothing to the ring that Pavlik can't deal with. Martinez has NEVER fought a guy who can box like KP, nor has he fought anyone who is as big, or as strong, or hits as hard. It ain't Pavlik who is at a stylisitic disadvantage.

It seems that big white dudes like Froch and Pavlik don't get near the credit they deserve for their strategies and skills. You don't need to be a slick master mover to beat someone's ass in a boxing ring. Especially when the guy you're fighting is much smaller than you. Pavlik has the experience and know-how to catch Martinez. Sure, at times Martinez will make him look silly, but the end result will most likely be a Pavlik KO. Martinez is good, but Pavlik is underrated and bigger. IMO, it'll be a good fight but I don't see Martinez swinging it. He'll have to expend way too much energy staying away from Pavlik, and I can't see him playing that game successfully all night.
