Which boxer really accomplished the most in the 80's?

Mike Spinks did what O'Brien, Carpentier, John Henry Lewis, Conn, Maxim, Moore and Bob Foster all failed to do, and in completely leapfrogging the ******* cruiserweight division, he did it against a consensus top five ATG heavyweight champion. Prior to that, he reunited a light heavyweight crown that had been divided since Foster's retirement vacated it. The Jinx cleaned out a highly competitive 175 pound division in the process.

 

He must hate Hearns and love Camacho because Hearns is top 3 in the 1980s and Camacho barely makes top 20!!!!! I agree with another poster I will not vote in a poll which does not have Hearns in it either. Camacho is a joke. Redo this thread and leave that guy out of it in put Hearns in!!

I don´t think Hearns is Top3. Spinks, Leonard and Chavez would be my Top3. Tyson and Hearns would complete the Top5 though.

 

It's a pity Bazooka Gomez never started his reign of terror in 80 instead of 77 as he's another mid decade ATG with record 18 Super/Bantam defences all by KO, then beating LaPorte For the Featherweight crown & then Lockridge for the S/Feather. but it's his 6 year reign at S/Bantam which deserves a big mention.

Chavez was not top 3 in the 1980s. He was one of those fighters who was good in half of each decade so really the 1980s was not the time he was top 3. I would rate him top 10 just on averaging it out. If 85-95 was a decade, he would be top 3. Tommy had to be top 5 and I think he was higher than Spinks. He was in more superfights and fought greater fighters. I rate it Leonard, Hearns,Hagler,Holmes,Spinks. Hearns over Hagler? yes. because Tommy fought more great fighters than Hagler and fought the whole decade fighting the best. 5 superfights to Hagler's 3. Dominant at welterweight and jr. middlweight. Sort of like the Hagler won the battle but Hearns won the war type of thing.

 

My vote is Hagler, for dominating the MW division from 80-87.

 

Leonard or Tyson

 

this thread shows just how stacked the 80's were. Cool hair and amazing music too. Cartoons were the best, and the films were epic.

 

Gotta be Leonard. In late '79 he beat Benitez in a great fight. The world knew the 80's would be big for him.

His fights with Duran x3, Hearns x2, Hagler, and even LaLonde were huge. Even his fights with D. Green and K. Howard were big events.

Keep in mind that he didn't even fight in '83, '85, and '86. Leonard was huge!

 

Good post, he gets my vote too..but I'd happily agree on Leanord or Hagler too.

Beating prime ray leonard. A lightweight beating an atg welter champ.
Taking prime atg middleweight hagler a tough gruelling 15 rounds.
Beating a huge middleweight to win the title at age 37.
All three achievements almost unparalleled in history.
