Its like Lamon Brewster and John Skully said, in Germany a guy like Timo Hoffman can be a superstar, in USA only one or two fighters of American descent are superstars. One of the main reasons Germany has such passion for boxing is because there are no bogus pay per views over there.
i never said it is the centre of boxing, it is not but it is growing up in ranks and to anyone bringing up the pound for pound lists etc there is a little problem, it is usually made by US mags and those same mags like the ring have a hard time giving credit to fighters who have not beaten top usa fighters.... while this would very well in the past, now it is different, you have these long time belt holders in germany, who were amauter stars before going pro and they stay champions while not going to the states and they fight other similar europeans like themselfs, with a similar bio yes i do think they should fight in the states but on the other hand this is not 1953, a world champion is just that a world champion and i dont like the fact that a lot of top americans dont ever fight outside the usa. while i do think boxing on a whole is better in usa then in germany or anywhere else the point remains is that when americans do go over there to fight the "protected euro fighter" they come back with a loss on their record
nope. selling tickets does not assure germany being the boxing capital. you have to consider the history of it all, and as bert sugar asserts, "boxing history is what separates it from other sports." sorry internationals, but the u.s is the capital of boxing, please believe.
agreed usa has the most history and i love boxing history BUT this does not mean their fighters should always have home court advantage and call themselfs world champs without ever even considering fighting in other countries
fighting in the usa if you are among the worlds top 20 brings you more money than fighting in any other country. but at this moment in time USA BOXING is only ahead in money terms. audience/tv share /crowds it has dropped behind germany in terms of marketing and making there fighters famous. i mean chad dawson struggles to get 200 of his own fans to a fight despite being in the worlds top 10 and fighting out of america. bernard hopkins fanbase is small and limited. mayweather without a big name along side him to draw in fans is struggling to fill an arena. if boxing was taken to the regions in america, i beleive it would help american boxing and boxers increase there marketabilty. instead promoters fight in deserts and casinos /want all there fights on PPV and as a result about 1 in every 1000 americans now watches boxing regualy , compared to 1 in 7 germans. so money wise america is still ahead of germany /historically way way ahead / exposure wise to the general public and worldwide audience america has fallen way behind germany . IMO boxing capitol wise, america will always be on top no matter what happens in the future, america for example even now has more proffesional heavyweights than the rest of the world put together and that goes for most weightclasses i would guess down to welter. so the number of fighters america produces makes it very very important and always will be. but until PPV and remote locations are changed, boxing in america has now become a very exclusive elite sport which only a tiny percentage of americans watch.
When Vitali knocked out Titty-at-l-ASS' fighter Kirk Johnson in New York, New York's Madison Square, Garden, USA, the fight was sold out during a huge snow storm. Vitali knocked him out in the second round. Larry Merchant; "The whale has been harpooned." Titty said that Kirk Johnson would knock Vitali out with one punch. LOL! HBO should have learned from this fight that Klitschkos are popular in US, fans want to see them, but because of prejudice, they boycott them.
Farmboxer, HBO knew that 1) Wlad fights less exciting fights than Vitali, 2) Chambers didn't stand a chance. Further, the fight was not aired 'cause of the price of the TV rights. Sad but true.
chambers is a good fighter, and has beaten up good tall fighters before so on paper it was not a horribe match up, i was curious to watch it, but i do agree somewhat about prejudice with farmboxer, this is not the first time that american network stop attention to a weightclass as soon as a foreign has taken over, and when an american comes becomes top dog in that weightclass the networks pick it up again, and start talking "he is the best since....insert the name of the last dominant american in that weight class
