Anyone else think Jones could give Hopkins more trouble than we think?

A few shots might land but he ain't got the footspeed he once had to stay out of trouble and his chin certainly ain't what it was. I'd love him to pull it off but there is about a 85% chance of him losing IMO.

 

I've always wondered how BHop was going to deal with Roy in this one.

Conventional wisdom is heavily on the side of Bernard.

I think there could be surprises here.

When he's 50, Roy will still have the natural ability and the experience to beat a lot of guys. But he will always be vulnerable to a clean shot to the head. Maybe he always was, but with his superb reflexes , he didn't get hit flush much when he was younger. Seems as soon as he slowed 1/1000 of a second, he started getting flattened routinely.Even if it appeared that the Australian stoppage was a bit hasty, the fact that he even got buzzed by a clubfighter does not bode well for Jones' chances against Hopkins.
But Hopkins style may suit Roy just fine. Hopkins doesn't appear to be so aggressive these days, he just looks to pick his shots and counter. That approach may not be the best way to approach even a diminished Roy. He's erratic now, but he made a clown out of Lacy, making Jeff beg to be knocked out , and certainly had Calzaghe cross eyed for a hot second. Joe shook it off, but he was hurt fairly seriously from one right hand.
One thing you know, a guy like Roy has a lot of pride, and he's got a lot to prove. I think Hopkins best performances have been when he came in as a big underdog.Trinidad and everyone else was looking past Hopkins, and some were fearing for his life against Pavlik.
If Hopkins is too sedate, and Roy is determined to go out a winner , you best not underestimate Jones. Logic says Hopkins, but boxing is full of variables and big surprises.

they're still gonna be fighting when they stay in the same retirement home together.

 

Hopkins is a 45 year old that's been fighting once a year for a while now and hasn't thrown too many punches per round since his fight against Howard Eastman.

I just don't see B-Hop sustaining pressure over Jones for an entire fight at 45 years of age and that's how Jones would be beat now. Hopkins looked great with Pavlik mainly because he was faster and constantly set himself up to counter Pavlik which was always the one coming in.

At the pace the fight should be fought, I really think RJJ has a valid chance of pulling off a "W", solely because of his superior hand speed...once again.

 

Roy wins the first or second rounds with Hopkins style, but if Hopkins goes for the early ko it won't matter because Roy always covers up, he has no legs, and his punch resistance is no more. Hopkins will go to the body, head, he has every advantage over Roy. Roy literally would of sparked Green with 1 arm if Roy was in his prime and he would of schooled Calzaghe too. How the mighty have fallen.

 

Yes Roy Jones still has greater handspeed.

But it was'nt the hand speed that bothered Hopkins in the first fight..

It was Roy Jones agility/movement.

17 years later, Hopkins has the greater agility/movement..!

That is why, i believe this fight will be abit more eventfull than most people think..!!!

 

I just don't think Hops presently has much better movement than Jones..and he certainly hasn't KOed anyone since....the Golden Boy..which was the much smaller man and obviously out of his weight class.

The last time Hopkins fought a man truly his size was in 2006 against Tarver....

It's normal for Hops to be the favorite but he's "No Executioner" like he'd still like you to believe, and at 45, what he does well now may just be the kind of game that fits with Jones.

 

This is a good insight

But I honestly believe Roy is going to be reluctant to let his hands go, and play the one punch game with Hopkins, which I think the crafty Hopkins will be too much for Roy and his diminished skills.
