I am new to this board and I have to say the dialogue is good here. I thought I would give my take on Floyd. 1st I will get some facts out of the way. Floyd Mayweather is a great fighter. He will be a 1st ballot hall of famer. But there is something missing. And to me it is that competitive drive that seperates greats from the greatest. Here is the problem I have with Floyd. He questions why he should be fighting other great fighters. To me that is indefenceable. He will say things like "Why should I fight Shane Mosley, he has 5 losses," "I have nothing to prove" Then he will go around after that and say, "the best have to fight the best" Then he fights a guy 2 weight classes below him. Imagine Tiger Woods pulled out of the Masters because he say "I already won 4 why do I need to win another one." Or Tom Brady saying, "Super Bowls, I already got 3, why do I need any more." Or Sugar Ray Robinson telling Jake La Motta, "You have more then 5 losses, I don't need to fight you." His fans will give every excuse in the book why Floyd should't fight anybody. And they will spout off talking points that Floyd says, Like he isn't as good....blablabla. Yes we as fight fans can talk a good game, just like the fighters. But the reason to talk is because when they get in the ring they fight it out and prove them and us right or wrong. The talk is settled. But the main thing about that is They HAVE TO get in the ring in order to settle things. For some fight fans to justify Floyd not fighting Shane Mosley because he is not worthy or that he ducked him in 2006 are just flat out idiots. In fact if I was a fan of Floyd I would love for him to shut up the critics and have him take on Shane and beat him. But until he does, he does deserve criticism for not fighting the best fighters that are available to him. In fact, the media does a **** pour job of addressing this. There are some writers like David Mayo of Grand Rapids and Kevin Iole of yahoo.com who have never been critical of Floyd and in fact they should be working for his PR team. Ask yourself a question. Remember Sugar Ray Leonards comeback in 1987. Did he come back and fight the lightweight champion of the world. No he went out and took on the toughest and hardest fight out there, Marvin Hagler. And he won(on the cards). What did Mayweather do. He came over the contracted weight of 144 to fight a guy who he already had a huge advantage over. And while he is a great fighter, what he did was not great. What do you think Miguel Cotto or Shane Mosley would have done JMM if they were allowed to come in at 147 or 146s. Marquez would not have lasted 7 rounds. Yet now Floyd is best fighter ever! What, did I miss something. What happened to great athletes testing themselves. Fighting fights where there is a chance they could lose. Conclusion here is yes, Floyd is great. I believe he is fantastic. But he needs to test himself. That is all fans really want. Like I said, I can't imagine Tiger Woods not trying to go after Jack Nicklaus's record of 18 majors. Granted Golf is way different, but it about challenging yourself to be the greatest. That is where respect comes in to play. And until he fights Mosley, Cotto or Pacquiao he should not get much.
Welcome to the boards. Floyd isn't retired, and soon he will answer your questions hopefully. I wouldn't read too much into what Floyd says about other fighters. I also wouldn't comment on how Floyd fans think. These are things you don't truly know at the moment. JMM would have a better chance against Shane, Cotto and Berto than he did with Floyd. Those guys leave themselves open at times, Floyd does not.
these are also the same guys whom a bloated, slow, flat-footed marquez would not want to be standing in front of. surely they would KO the samae marquez that fought floyd at the first barrage of power punches they could land. and judging by the way marquez had lost his reflexes and the sting in his punches, there is no way marquez would keep shane or miguel cotto off him, and there is no way he would be able to avoid them for more than six rounds
Thanks for the welcome. I think Cotto, Mosley would have blown out JMM. Yes they may have been hit more, but they would have walked right through him. Especially at 146 or 147. I just find it funny that some people are saying Floyd should NOT fight Shane Mosley. Heck he should fight all these guys. Don't make excuses, just go out and shut people up. Yeah Mosley has 5 loses. But they are not like he lost to Golden Johnson or someone like that. They are against world class elite oppostion. In fact, Winky Wright and Vernon Forrest would have beaten Floyd in my opinion. Too big and their size and skill would over come Floyd's. My opinion. Cotto is another story. But in my opinion if he beats Shane he will shut a lot of people up. If people would say Shane is 'old'. Then why they hell does Ring Magazine have him as the 3rd best fighter in the world. To me that would impressive no matter how old Shane is, because Shane can still fight. And if he were to beat Pacquiao as well. That would shut ever body up. But as right now I think no one should be shutting up. We should all talking very loudly about how Floyd still has a lot to prove.
shane.. needs to wait. beating shane would shut alot of people up. i'll give you that. however, it wouldn't shut the cotto fans up or the pacquiao fans. at this juncture those fans outnumber the mosely fans and rightfully so. cotto beat shane. bright side for floyd, he won't have to shut cotto and pacquiao fans up. one of them will do that to the other for him. shane should have to wait to fight the winner of floyd vs the winner of the fight in november. by virtue of his loss to cotto. in order to remain viable for that he should take a fight with clottey and prove himself. because as it is now, mosely is asking for a fight with floyd by virtue of his win over margarito. take away margarito's cement trick and what do you have? you have a halfwitted punching bag. that's right. mosely's big win was against a guy who's half as smart as a stuffed piece of gym equipment. bright side for mosely if he has to wait, he can pretty much kill three birds with one stone.
personally that's just how i see it being fair. in the long run im not a fan of any in particular. it doesn't matter to me who's fighting. whoever is fighting, i'll predict a winner. by the way, nice thread, newbie. welcome. mikeweaver, huh? that's a blast from the past.

To be fair, I didn't hear any other fighter call Mayweather out of retirment. When Marquez beat Daiz he was asked what was next. He said Pacquiao didn't want too fight him so he want's to fight the best an called out Mayweather. At the time, Pacquiao had just steped up from lightweight to welter an beat Oscar and was reguarded as P4P#1 so you can understand why Floyd would want to beat the man that give Pacquiao hell in their two fights together. Fighting the #2 P4P fighter as a comeback fight was pretty huge, Its not Mayweathers fault he was a level above Marquez an made it look easy, an this is coming from a massive Marquez fan. Marquez has a better chance against Cotto or Shane than he does Mayweather. Edit - Just ignore me
