calzaghe had just split from warren and he and roy made the fight between themselves , with no promoters or managers agreeing to split the money 50/50 so the calzaghe v jones fight was very easily made.

kelly would have seemed the bigger risk , so it was a fighter taking the most money for the biggest reward despite there being better fights out there.

pavlik v calzaghe i am sure would have generated very good money.

calzaghe thought he was going to get 10 million from the jones ppv but i have not looked it up but i expect he would have only gotten half that.

another factor was that warren wanted the kelly fight i think , but had not paid joe for the hopkins fight , and to this day still has not paid joe £2,000,000 for the hopkins fight and they split acrimoniuosly.

because kelly was only a contender (middleweight, not even a 168 ) thats why he was offered 400k and had to fight in the uk .

it was calzaghes next fight after lacy when they were looking for opponents.

it was kelly`s record of 31-0 ? big ko`s that would have appealed to american tv but kellys management declined the fight.

I don't think either of these guys wanted this fight in reality....especially Calzaghe.

Joe had a number of options towards the end, such as Dawson, Tarver, SMWs such as Froch, Ward, Pascal, Bute and top MWs like Pavlik/Abraham. In typical Calzaghe fashion, he fought dead man Jones.

Pavlik was a much more intimidating figure pre-Bhop and his KOs of Miranda and Taylor had been devastating.

Calzaghe took the money fight, not sure if he would have made more money just fighting pavlik though.

Pavlik was small-fry, financially-speaking (very few of the casuals, particularly in the UK, knew or cared about Kelly), and Joe was at the end of his career.
The Jones fight was about two things:

1.) Having a large but not-too-strenuous final payday.
2.) Heading off casuals' criticism. If he hadn't fought Jones (no matter how good / bad Jones actually was at the time), people would have said, "Yeah; but he never fought Jones, did he?" for the rest of his life. Nobody is seriously going to mention Kelly in the same way.

The reports were he was being offered $10 mill for the Pavlik fight. Only Joe's statement to the local rag had him making that much for the Jones fight and most people say that the numbers just don't add up. Gate + PPV sucked and then they had the expenses of being promoters.

a combination of Pavlik losing to Bernard and Calzaghe not wanting the fight and going for RJJ instead.

Pavlik got beaten with ease by Hopkins a month before Calzaghe fought RJJ, thats why the fight never happened.

It funny that ******s like hermit talks about Calzaghe refuse to fight Pavlik and blah/blah/blah but won't make a prediction about that fight lol. Pavlik fans should be happy that Calzaghe turn the fight down cause if he would have fought Pavlik, i would have bet all my money that Calzaghe easily beat 1 dimensional Pavlik by a shut out just like what Calzaghe did to Lacy.

Calzaghe got seriously shooked when he saw his sparring partner Gary Lockett get destroyed in just 3 rounds by Kelly

So he then ran and signed up for a fight with a much smaller threat in Roy Jones Jr

Seriously, I've seen filing cabinets with better turning circles than the bullet-domed hypejob from Youngstown, Kelly "Plodder" Pavlik. He is a complete wardrobe of a fighter.:rofl

His excuses after the Hopkins embarrassment were an utter disgrace.

Its a move that hurt Calzaghes legacy imo
It sure would have, two undefeated champions
ppv wise it only did around 225k
Yeah Warren has said that he wanted Calzaghe to fight Pavlik. Calzaghe won his court case with Warren so Warren is going to have to pay him at some point
I still that would of been a bad move, they should of made the Johnson fight happen

Thanks for your replys as well

it was not joe calling kelly out.
he had nothing to do with it.

warren was looking for fighters to matchmake for joe, pavlik was offered the fight against joe around june 2006 for an october 8th date by warren.

pavlik was not known then which was why the offer was 400k approx, i cannot remember the exact money, the offer was on the table a week and team pavlik turned it down.

this was nothing to do with kelly not wanting a calzaghe fight, or even joe wanting a pavlik fight.

it was a promoter looking for an opponent who he could get relativley cheaply.

I don't like Calzaghe but I do think Pavlik would have barely lasted the distance against the bigger guy
