Guzman-Funeka will go on... despite Guzman being 9 pounds over.

I'm thinking that Guzman just doesn't want to fight anymore. Coming in 9 pounds over and not telling anyone ahead of time makes it look like he didn't even try and was hoping the fight got cancelled. Nate wanted to fight him when Joan came in overweight in their fight, but Guzman refused. I'm guessing the guy's heart just isn't in it anymore, if it ever was.

With a weight limit of 135 pounds, 9 pounds over is 6.67% over the limit, has there ever been an elite fighter come in that high a percentage over what he was meant to weigh in at?

 

Guzman has been my favorite fighter, through all the inactivity and frustration, for years.

I'm certainly not proud of the Team Guzman approach to this fight. Guzman should have gained a lot of respect for his performance in the first fight. He fought like a warrior. I didn't hear anybody bringing back that old, tired Guzrun moniker.

I'm certain this weight plan was not Joan's brainchild. This is apples and oranges to the Campbell fight. Guzman got lazy and started training late for that fight, did try hard to make weight, but his body didn't respond the way he had become accustomed to.

Four months ago he made 135. It was probably very difficult, but he made it. He's been in training for awhile for the rematch. I think his new trainer Lee Beard would be an interesting interview at this point. He seemed to be having a great time in the gym with Joan. I also would not be surprised if GBP was made aware of this plan at some point.

At the end of the day, this fight is actually really intriguing now. I'm not 100% certain that Guzman cares about the result. I hope he does and comes out strong and maintains some dignity. I hope he comes to win, we should be able to determine that very early in the fight.

Like it or not, an impressive, decisive win for Guzman will still leave him with a future. He is, after all, with GBP. And GBP controls much of the hottest division in boxing, 140. If the plan was to come in at a comfortable weight and actually fight to win, then it could actually work out for Guzman in the end. They took their chances that Funeka was not getting back on a plane to South Africa without a paycheck, knowing that nobody at 135 wants any part of him anyway. Funeka had to accept the fight.

I'm looking forward to it and I hope Guzman knocks him out and brings it to 140.

 

Who gives a ****. Making weight is so overrated. Let's just see a great fight and be done with it.

 

It's unfair and disrespectful for boxing and their opponent. Two pounds and maybe evennnn 3 pounds, but 9 pounds is shameful. Even if he wins, he gets no respect, no title, no new fans, and even if GBP controls most of the 140, do they control bradley, paulie, torres, maidana, alexander, and many more? I doubt Guzman want's any of those fighters mention above and I don't even feel he's ready to be at 140 to even a guy like Urango. Guzman has lost me as a fan even if he wins tonight by KO. At the end of the day Funeka would gain more fans and most likely win this fight even with odds against him and get more opportunities. I would not even be surprise if Guzman loses, GBP releases him and then what?

 

Making weight is very important in the sport of boxing and has been a tradition for many many years and if anything underrated. And 9 pounds over the limit is very very very rare., shame on Guzman.

Fight is still on. Will be interesting to see what happens. I expected Funeka to beat him, but, now that Guzman is gonna be stronger entering the fight, anything could happen.
