Let's be honest, how often do fighters come out before fights and say that inactivity may catch them out?

When do fighters come out and say anything negative pre-fight?

It's just not the done thing so to level that accusation is, I believe, unfair.

Also, how many fighter would turn down the chance at a British Title against a fighter they think they can beat?

As for not bringing it on the night, that's fair enough dependant on how you scored the fight but I think you're being a bit too critical.

I agree he took the fight, and he should get props for that. However, it would be far more dignified for him to just say, i didn't have it on the night, no excuses etc. He had plenty of notice for the fight, granted he did not have a tune up.
IMO you can't take a 12 rounder, and then complain that because of your inactivity you couldn't perform.
I accept it was another opportunity to re gain the british, and that it would be soft not to take it, but i just don't see the point in reeling off excuses.
If it sounds too critical, then so be it, because tony was happy enough to make noises before the fight about smashing paul, being in the best shape of his life etc.

Tony I think your a class fighter, I think you've got great balance and poise for a brit. I don't think you won the fight, I had you just losing by a couple of rounds but it was a performance that proved beyond doubt that you and Paul Smith are very much in the same league.

I thought Quigley beat Paul and was very unfortunate not to get the decision despite it been a pretty terrible fight- much like yours.

Every credit to Paul Smith coming on here and fighting his corner, he's got a great attitude and that made me a bit of a fan but I sincerely feel that he lacks anything that will take him onto the next level.

Yes he's heavy handed but he is slow off the mark. He lacks world class speed and variety. It wouldn't suprise me if years of feasting on journeyman has seen him lose a little of that drive. So now that he has made it to some sort of decent platform he's calling on skills that aren't there anymore and ending up in clinch fests.

Paul, well done for becoming British champion, but you'd do a lot worse then show a little respect for Tony. There's hardly nothing between you both ability wise.

To be fair to paul the only comment he made was saying he would knock out dodson and quigley on the same night.
The mud slinging came from tony and tony's fans. Read the thread.
As regards paul going on to a higher level. well it is a question that will be answered soon enough:deal

I agree with that, excuses are no good after the fight.

But to suggest he should come out pre-fight and give your opponent a psychological boost by saying your ring rusty just doesn't make sense.

yeah, coming out with comments like i am not prepared properly b4 the fight is bad, i accept that. But if it is the case, and you say it after the fight, you are setting yourself up for criticism.
Got to be honest though, i am a bit sceptical that this fella is the actual tony dodson, as don't seem to be him based on previous replies from the original tony dodson.

dodson is telling it how he see's it i dont think he sounds bitter or is making excuse's! show me the last title fight were a fighter has'nt said how he is going to win or he is in the best shape of his life! you sound like a paul smith bum boy, smith won and well done to him, you only have to look at tony's fights and his face to see how easy he cuts so a warm up was'nt a option,i am sure tony's hurting inside and does'nt need bell ends like you telling him he needs to retire!

Funny to see both boxers in here defending themselves against a load of keyboard warriors. Let's be honest, if this was all over a pint rather than over the internet, it would have settled itself a loooooooong time ago.

Anyways, I was one of the ones picking Dodson prior to the fight (I'm not particularly a fan of either boxer, I was neutral for this fight, just fancied Dodson to do it). I scored it a fair few rounds in Paul's favour.

I picked Quigley prior to the Smith fight, and had it scored 2 rounds in Smigga's favour on the night.

Top and bottom of it... Smigga deserves respect as a legitimate British champion. I'd like to know how many people have met Smigga who say he's this and that. I bumped into him for about 10 seconds a few weeks after the Quigley fight and he didnt seem like the type people are making him out to be. I dont profess to know the lad, but I'm not gonna start slating someone I dont know from Adam.

Similarly, Tony seems decent enough on the odd occassion I've met him (Tony - I fought on one of the white collar shows at the olympia last year, you were there - you wont remember but you seemed sound enough).

My point is, the majority of boxing fans will judge a fighter solely on what happens between the ropes.

So, with that in mind, Smigga is British champion and has done well. He's proved me wrong twice now in beating Dodson and Quigley and I hope he does it a third time by beating Magee. Because I'd rather see a Scouser with the belt than anyone else. I pick Magee to beat him, but that's not because I think Smigga is arrogant or anything else, that's just my pick based on what I've seen from both fighters.

Best of luck to both Tony and Paul in their future fights and I hope Smigga does prove me wrong again and beats Magee.

oh **** off you twat. They are the words of a man searching for excuses. End of the day, if after the fight, not having fought for twelve months was a reason for not performing, he should have had an inkling that it would be a factor before the fight, i did, and i mentioned it on here.
He didn't win, because on the nioght, he did not fight or train like a champion
