Geez, I thought I saw Fenech pasting an old Zarate left right and centre towards the end if the fight
I saw the same thing. I was there that night and thought Jeff was handling Zarate without any trouble. I watched Zarate train when he arrived here. He wasnt the same guy who I watched beat Paul Ferreri years before.
Jeff, what did you think of Fenech's antics after the fight? He thought for a minute that he'd lost due to his cut eye and Zarate raised his arms as if to claim the win. Fenech walked over to him and was about to lay into him, and Zarate covered up to protect himself. After seeing that I started to wonder whether Fenech was made of the right stuff when things were going against him A few years later during the second Nelson fight he aimed a knee directly at Nelson's groin. Not good
Bollox Jeff was an emotional kid. He bit a guy one night because I got robbed against his brother. Jeff was in trouble against Azumah in the second fight so he was in survival mode. I remember the first day he walked into the Newtown Police Boys gym. He was very passionate in everything he did. He was 14 going on 21. Anything that I have ever asked of him he has never refused. He doesnt get on with the Mundines but hes been a wonderful friend to me.
1. Jerry Jerrome (if the blood content 'weighs in' correctly). ...the other 24 spots are up to you Flamengo!
Strange.. We must have different copies of the fight.. The tape I have is complete with half witted commentaters who don't acknowlege Zarate is there and nearly wet their pants when Fenech lands a limp punch- left or right. Quite embarassing to watch and listen to. Fenech's team QUIT that fight. There's no convincing me otherwise. Zarate was getting on top- not on top at the time of the stoppage- but he was sorting things out very quickly. He'd have halted Fenech IMO.
Have not spoken to Bomber this week to ask him.. But if there's .1% Aboriginal blood in Brian, he's claimed to the list.... :tong
As I recall that fight, either the last or the previous round, Zarate drove one right into the sternum that really hurt Jeff.
Fenech's team quit? I haven't seen the fight since it happened but I didn't realise a corner could stop a fight and demand the scorecards are tallied. From memory the doc stopped the fight due to the severity of Fenech's cut. It then went to the scores which had Fenech well ahead on all cards Fenech started tentatively due to the fearsome reputation Zarate brought with him. He took control about round 3 and there was also a knockdown of Zarate in round 3 or 4 In which part of the fight did Zarate take control? By your own admission it wasn't at the end so....??? I've checked the scores...40-34 on all cards after 4 rounds. Taking into account the local bias in the scoring it's still a fairly decisive indication of who was winning the fight
Bollox... FFS, it was a Mordey promotion. Everyone from the canteen ladies to the Doctor were in Fenech's corner that night. Watch the fight again mate.. you'll see Zarate picking his way very well back into the fight.. yeah, he stumbles over a right hand that drops him, with little lasting effect. regardless, the 'severity' of the cut is nonsense.. Its under the eye.. exactly like the cut in Las Vegas. Not stoppage in Vegas..
As I said, I haven't seen the fight since 1987 but will watch it again to confirm whatI saw the first time round
Flamengo the scorecards had Jeff in front because he was. He was cut from a head clash. Johnny Lewis knew to pull him out knowing it would go to the cards. Remember Ali v Cooper. Thats why good fighters have smart cornermen.
Flamengo glad we agree on something. Got your message. Thanks so much for your help today. See you in Melbourne soon.
