I heard someone claiming that Ali's corner cheated wanting to give Muhammad more time in between rounds after the knockdown by claiming a torn glove and that they were succesfull. I just watched it on youtube and you can clearly see that the round ends as he's up at 3.09 and at 4.14 he's back and whoops Cooper big time... So it's 5 seconds extra time max...

Is the video not legit, cut?

I rewatch Ali's fights lately and slowly change my opinion on him. I thought he was overrated but I begin to be convinced I was wrong...

It's almost a myth at this point. From stories of going to dressing rooms and waiting and waiting to finally get him a glove.

The truth is Ali got 5 seconds extra. No more than 10 seconds extra. It's been really overblown. I didn't watch that video but I've seen the original cut.

The original "story" was Dundee saw a "minor" nick in the glove and stuck his finger in it and made the hole a lot bigger so that the glove had to be changed out.

I don't know if that is true or not.

dundee so much as admitted that, as well as the use of smelling salts (i believe in his latest autobiography). some shenanigans but imo nothing that really changed the outcome dramatically

Angelo Dundee said that the glove had a little rip in it but he made it much worse... so it would give Ali a little more rest between rounds.

I always have to laugh when people moan about this, as it it discredits Ali. It's the man himself AND Dundee that are amongst the chief culprits in re-telling the 'time between rounds' tale over the years.

Although no known (as) live film exists of the fight, the Beeb still have the original (as) live radio feed.

A decade or so back they played it again, and it showed the gap between rounds was between 68 and 70 seconds.

Ali (Clay) got about an extra 10 seconds...

My bad, I meant getting up - and the end of the round.

Was Ali saved by the bell?

If Ali hadn't got the extra few seconds could he have won?

I think Ali would have won regardless but Cooper sure did land some good hooks on him in that round.

I say he would not. He was in lalaland big time - I've never seen him that shaken. And Cooper ain't no bum - that's for sure.

But being saved by the bell is not cheating.
Extra time under 10 seconds means not much to me.
But now I start to wonder about those smelling salts... It's not legal, is it?

    Oh yeah.

Dundee did use smelling salts - you can see it in the video no doubts!

The bell sounds as Clay hit the deck. Smelling salts were illegal in British ring back then (well, that's how it's usually reported). Although I have no literature confirming this but I do know they were illegal in 1967, from a Reg Gutteridge article in BI. So, unless this was brought in the four years previous then they were illegal then too (which seems extremely likely and the reason it's mentioned so often).

hehe i have to admit Angello Dundee was always looking for an advantage in the game but i don't think even the torn glove bull**** would make a difference Ali was ahead at that point and cooper was pouring blood down his eye i think Ali would've won even without that extra time Ali had an amazing ability to come back after a knock down and at least fight back I can't say the same for ALL of the atgs
didn't make a difference to the fight
