Yeah, McAuley would have been brutalised.you don't want to be moving up in weight with a leaky defence and dentable chin against Galaxy.
You got it all wrong anarci. All this perceived negative talk you hear on here about Galaxy is simply in response to certain sections of the boxing media vastly overrating him. Especially the Ring, and to a lesser extent the HOF I guess. We can have this argument over and over again but the simple fact is that Galaxy did not..repeat..DID NOT..fight and beat the best of that era..Not only did he not fight the other champs and elite fighters of the time, he missed quite a few of the second tier guys aswell. The argument for Khaosai deserving these very high accolades has more holes then swiss cheese. Anyone who says otherwise is being completely unfair to the other fighters of that era and is not being even handed in the slightest. He is certainly among the best 3 or 4 fighters to ever lace them up at 115 though...he is a great little fighter...I have never heard anyone say otherwise on here.
:good aGREED ROCK :yep HE DIDNT FIGHT ALOT OF THE BEST GUYS AROUND, BUT I CANT FORGET ABOUT WHAT A BEAST HE WAS. I HAVE PICTURES WITH HIM AT THE WBHOF BANQUET AND HE WAS REAL SHORT(IM NOT THAT TALL BUT LOOKED LIKE KAREEM NEXT TOO HIM WIDE THOUGH BUILT LIKE A BOX, EVEN IF I DIDNT KNOW WHO HE WAS. YOU CAN TELL HE IS A SRONG LITTLE MAN.
I'm glad he's getting some respect in this thread... In an another thread he was bashed by almost everyone for fighting weak competition and being a crude but powerful puncher. He was Avoided! Nobody wanted to fight him. And even though it's quite easy to say that Jiro Watanabe, Gilberto Roman, and others were much more skilled boxers and would of outboxed him...try doing that for 15 rounds against a guy with an Iron Chin/Will who could outpower you and knock you out with one hit.
That is a good point there. Galaxy H2H is a very potent force. I think a guy like Roman who had a brilliant chin and was adept at coping with pressure has a brilliant chance of beating Galaxy. But someone like Watanabe who was more skilled but perhaps mentally weaker could fold to Galaxy as he kept the pressure on and stalked him for round after round. Tough fight this one to call.
I think it's more likely he was happy defending at home most of the time like Calzaghe, or most asian lower weight champs really, rather than the other top fighters avoiding him.
Pretty irrelevant though..its not mostly about what he could have done, its what he did do..which while very impressive and consistent in my eyes should not garner the kind of praise that some have given him and others have seemed to accept as fair. I think he was somewhat avoided...Watanabe dropped his belt not to fight him but from what I can gather that was to fight to other thai champ who had the higher profile at the time. But at the same time those fighters you mentioned had no problem fighting each other, many traveled to do so. So I find that argument pretty baseless when the best fighters of that era pretty much found some way to get in the ring with each other but Galaxy could never do the same..nor could he with other Thai champs of the time (which I understand does not happen much) nor would he move up to avenge his bro etc etc. It really is probably a bit of both, like lora said he was probably just comfortable fighting at home where he was a hero and getting great coin fighting the mostly average opposition he tore through.
I reckon Watanabe would outbox him pretty convincingly early on...He might fade a bit late and have to overcome some rough patches. But I think Jiro would hold on and have enough power to keep Galaxy from finishing all over him. Id say he gets home by about 4 or 5 points.
He is one of those interesting types whose obvious ability on film gets him a little overrated (considering his resume) but whose resume gets him a bit underrated (considering his obvious ability on film). Overall he balances out on ESB, but opinions will vary by poster and by day. This content is protected
very good borderline great fighter, did what few other boxers are able to do and got out when he was still at the top
