So I want to spar this guy at my gym but I know he'd wup the **** out of me as hes alot more experienced and hes the fastest combo puncher Ive ever seen and he packs a wallop. Hes 3-4 inches shorter than me and the same weight as me (Im 5'10.5" and 160-165).

Im inexperienced with his kind of speed and how he fights, he fights low, throws about 5 punches a go and throws them very fast and hard. I usually fight as a counter puncher and Im very elusive but not with people that are "in your face" throwing lots of punches fast. So what can I do? I was thinking Id try catching him coming in with a straight right and pivoting but I know I wont stick with the pivoting thing but I intend to try. Anything else?

well, you got the reach on him, so run the crap out of your jab. When he tries to move in on ya, move and mabe counter with a hook and pivot there, then back to the jab.

My advice for you when fighting speedy midgets is to rely on your jab. They'll try to slip your jabs to get inside. Throw a blinding jab, side step and throw a quick sharp hook. If none of that lands just throw some more jabs. Throw double jabs, throw triple jabs, throw quadruple jabs. And don't forget to move laterally and pivot to keep them moving. Every time they try to start a combination. Throw in a jab. If they get going with a combination, throw in another jab.

In short, just lots of jobs. No single ones though. Throw them in bunches.

I'd love to have your reach and height advantage. You see I'm one of those speedy midgets, minus the speed.

    ... Sigh. Same here.

Pre-emption - stop him before he get started, with jabs. You'll see him coming, because he'll have to step closer to compensate for his short reach. You should also be able to step out of his reach very easily, so long as you leave yourself adequate room. If he's aggressive, he'll chase you around the ring to no avail and tire quickly. You have control over the pace.

"accidently" give him a low blow. Normally they get pissed to focus on the game so they try for the knockout or they tend turn on the defensive mode.

Thanks for the advice guys. lol @ the speedy midgets comment. I'll try that we'll see how it goes.

Im not sure a low blow will be that easy cheech considering Im already taller than the guy lol Id have to really duck down AND reach low, theres no way it'd look accidental.

Move your feet, don't cross your feet, pump your jab out there consistently and then deck him with your cross. Don't overcommit to anything, keep yer damned hands up and pray that he doesn't rip your head off.

  11. To add somethin else, don't be too shy working in his strong area. It's all good experience even if you do end up with a few bruises. Thats what sparrings for.

Bad thing about speedy midgets is most cases you have to fight them eventually, so also going toe to toe on your strengths you'll want to try practise manuaevering on the inside, like tying up his arms and restricting his movements to your advantage, not in a full clinch but getting a feel as to how he moves around and reacts, should try and find out what pisses him off. Cover up good.

Experiment moving his head around within the boundries of the rules, pivot feet and push your weight at differant angles to gain the advantage like being able to exit, punching his side/body, moving and catching his centre of balance while not being caught yourself etc. I would smother him and try to hurt his will a little, pretend you don't respect his punching to damage his confidence, even if he thinks youre stupid its a bluff. You can't let your opponant dominate totally in his strong area so learn how to exploit it.

Shift and dominate their centre of balance, don't give him anything to be happy about. Damage his strengths then work yours.

Use your height and reach advantage. When he steps in and trys to get close smother him, lean on him and tie him up.

why dont you post a video?

however, if he keeps coming at you; use sidesteps left and right and uppercuts. if he is close, then hold; wait for the "break" command, step back and counterpunch

You need to learn the good ol' Mayweather shoulder roll. Retreat to the ropes, allow him to punch himself out while your D-ing his ass up, than BAM counter uppercut. Works like a charm.
