He was young and those losses occured 5 years before he fought Liston the first time. They're pretty excusable if you ask me, a lot of old timers had losses on the way up.

no doubt, losses are no big deal... but he did get hammered by former LHW Satterfield, late-sub or not

I know I'm getting off subject though... this is about his left hook and he did have a pretty hard hook.

Well Satterfield, even if only a LHW, hit as hard as anyone. Williams was very young, and didn't have the best chin anyway so a stoppage loss isn't that weird.

But yeah, we're a bit off topic. I love Williams left hook, it's not often you see guys throw triple or even quadruple left hooks :good

I know I'm posting a bit late on this thread but just thought I'd put down to begin with the best left hook knockouts or knockdowns (or just plain old left hooks) I've seen on film in heavyweight history (or at least the ones that first spring to mind) - in no particular order (other than chronological):

Jack Dempsey nailing Willard for the first knockdown

Dempsey's hook knocking down Gene Tunney for the long count

Joe Louis too many to mention but as an example the triple hook against Max Baer

Jersey Joe Walcott putting Ez Charles' lights out

Walcott putting Marciano on the seat of his pants

Rock blowing away Kid Matthews with the jab-double hook

    Patterson blasting Johannson

    Liston smashing Cleve Williams

Frazier flooring Ali and also Bob Foster (evil) and Jimmy Ellis

    - thought I'd also mention for the Brits on here Cooper's hook against Clay, Bruno's hook against Tyson, and also Lennox's hook against Bruno (truly awesome - how Bruno stood for that is completely beyond me??)

well that's a start - if any more spring to mind I'll add them as and when -peace out

On this site many claim he was never hurt, never got tired, was a terrific defensive fighter, would have outslugged the best of the big men sluggers , fought top notch opposition in their prime and walked on water ... you must take them with a gain of salt ... :nut

    Actually,

I do not think anyone here says those things about him. Its a frigment of your imagination.

I am a HUGE Sonny Liston fan. I hate the fact you like Liston too. You do not deserve to like liston and his opposition with the way you treat Marciano.

I know! I know his brother Lou very well. Just to let you know, I MC'ed the unveiling of the Rocky Marciano Stamp back in 1999. I was asked by Rocky's brother Lou. A few days later I also Mc'ed the unveiling of the Joe Louis Memorial Park in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey where Louis use to train.

good picks... I'll add Holyfield's left hook that dropped Bowe

Tua landed 2 great hooks on Ruiz. Tua landed 3 great hooks on Moorer... a left hook to the body, a right hook and left hook to the head. Tua also clobbered these notable fighters with good hooks-

    D. Wilson, D. Izon, O. Maskaev, O. Sullivan, R. Daniels, and F. Oquendo.

He landed some good hooks on Ibeaubuchi but Ike didn't go down.

He actually had an excellent jab as well, better than Holmes. BTW, do you know the night Louis fought Rocky Joe was better than in the Schmeling rematch ? Just ask ...
