This is news to me, I had no idea. Wow. I probably don't have all the info, but wasn't that something which Steward always did? I remember when Lewis was looking for a new trainer, that was one of the conditions under Steward that nearly led to him getting someone else...Thell Torrance I think came closest.
Steward took a cut from McClellan's purse from the Benn fight?? He hadn't been in his corner for a year or more.
You shouldn't. You, and probably your dad, had no idea what extent his injuries were. i enjoyed my night then, the greatest boxing night I've ever known.
and you shouldn't feel bad either dunky. Boxing can be the ultimate **** of a sport but what can you do.
I thought this, the bit before the trauma in the US, was well known. I had the boxing news the following week and it might have been mentioned in there. Unfortunately I can't check it as i gave it to McGrain.
I'm sure Steward was owed alot of money by G-Man. So to clarify, G Man left Britain on his own terms but the true trouble started in California! Crazy ****.
Icemax, you really need to watch this fight again .. This was the gutsiest performance from a British fighter that ive ever seen .. The G Man was the hardest puncher of his generation, a genuine 'Hitman', but Benn had super human heart and will-to-win in this fight, the atmosphere in the arena was nothing like ive ever heard, it was a Roman Arena, it was a true bear pit .. Forget about Honeyghan beating a weight-drained Curry, Forget about Hatton beating an old Tzsyu, forget about Calzaghe beating old men Hopkins and Jones, Forget about Lennoz beating old man Holyfield and old man Tyson (wow, theres a real pattern here with British fighters getting so much glory for beating past their peak former greats) .. Benn v McClellan was the best performance by a British fighter in living memory .. The ending is hard to take but Benns performance must be appreciated and must go down in the annals of Boxing for sheer determination under heavy artillery .. It was a stunning performance ..
You can't blame yourself for that. It's a boxers business to get their opponent in trouble. It's sad when someone gets badly hurt but that can happen in any sport. These guys choose to make their living this way, knowing the risks. I don't see it as any different to rugby, motor-racing or even show jumping where competitors can be seriously injured.
Wow that is some bombshell! I dont feel any guilt watching the Benn-McClellan fight, I think it was one of the best fights with one of the best atmospheres I've ever seen, God knows what it must have been like at ringside, I always remember Frank Bruno in his red suit standing there throwing every punch with Benn. Any fight can end with a life taken it's a sad part of the game but it happens, that fight deserves to be remembered as it featured two of the greatest warriors of the nineties going toe to toe. I dont think I've ever seen such bravery in the ring, Benn just refused to be beat.
Same here. An incredible fight which I still watch fairly often. Couldn't care less about McClellan tbh.
Bunceys got it spot on Im afraid. They the Americans were trying to save money. I talked to Mr Ashfar the Head of the St Barts Nuero unit later, He was disgusted with what happened.
was a great fight, and tragic as it was, could not have happened to a bigger ***** than the g-quitter man, like one of his dogs he shot because it quit in a fight, maybe someone should shoot that dick,
