Other than the opponent you mentioned and McIntyre (who currently has 9 KO's in nearly 40 fights) the rest have less than 3 KO's at the time Brook got in there with them. I've nothing against Brook but it must be said that he's probably won a Lonsdale for keeps with the weakest set of opposition ever. Barrie Jones tanked in Prizefighter, Elwell wasn't even an area level fighter, Lomax wasn't that good at all (has a near shutout loss to Watson years ago) - only McIntyre actually had a pulse.
Exactly. About a year ago I added up all the KO wins his opponents had had in their total fights and it was insane. Lomax as 2 stoppage wins in 19 fights, Elwell has 1 in 16 fights, Mcintrye 9 in 35 fights, Jones 7 in 21, Gethin 2 in 37, Kirk has 0 in 89. You can't go overboard on such stats, but I don't think I've ever seen a record like it. He has had only 2 fights less than Khan and yet Khan was being torn to bits on these boards for being protected and not stepping up when he was 12 fights deep.
Agree with everything Strike said. Technically he has severe shortcomings. That wouldn't be so bad if he was in with decent opposition and still coming out on top but he's fought an incredible number of opponents that are not durable and/or can't punch at all. It seems to me he's being protected. The fact he's won the Lonsdale belt and a title eliminator with that competition is staggering. I noticed an extremely one eyed article by Glen McCrory last night: http://www.skysports.com/opinion/story/0,25212,13275_6093367,00.html
I have a question how do you think kell brook would have done against quintana if i'm honest i think kell brook would have gotten taken care of by the 4th round, hes a european fighter that wont ammount to anything on the world stage, he'll have his hands full once he's in with fighters like alfonso gomez,
McIntyre was a good win, especially in the manner he did it. But he has to fight Jenning's next (apparently he will have to drop the British title in order to fight Jenning's next, otherwise he has to defend it against O'Donnell), then he can start moving up to Euro level.
brook was extremly pedestrian agains bienias for the intercontinental bollocks he won, and extremly lucky with the stoppage win. He was not losing the fight, as bienias came to cover up, but it proved nothing for brook.
Quintana would have chinned him. All Brooks opponents have been straight up boxer types, no counter punchers, nobody that is going to look to stick one on him..... or possessing a decent chin. As for the article..... :-(
What a ridiculous article. So Berto was a bit easy to hit and not all that impressive, he still stopped Quintana, has beaten Collazo and Urango and yet he is there for the taking by Brook? Brook who has shown what? Put on his arse by Karl David, and beaten up a load of guys who are feather fisted journeymen who apart from a couple just came to collect a cheque. Even if Brook has the natural ability to mix it with the Bertos of this world, he needs to be punished for the odd mistake in a fashion that is a glitch in a fight and not the end of it. Come through a few gradually more testing fights, take on guys who he has to be more careful against because he can feel they have power, beat guys with solid chins and high workrates who make him move and fight off the backfoot etc etc. You don't just put someone who has had no challenge and fought nobody of any note from low level domestic bouts straight into world level. It is ridiculous.
i have spoken to the TS and he admits the title is misspelt. it should say: Kell Brook is about to Rue ... the day he met Matt Mad Hatton, European Champ of the World This content is protected CHOOO CHOOOO
Some spot on comments here, especially the one about fighting Jennings, Hatton and then fringe world level fighters. That's exactly what he has done and has looked good doing it. I'd still like to see him in against fighters who are either very good counter punchers or have a big dig on them. I suppose though that that is the next logical step unless he takes Malignaggi for the WBA (provided PM comes through). Berto/Ortiz both have good power and that seems to be the natural progression right there. However, if I was his promoter I'd go the WBA route far less dangerous.
Yeah, I admit I would like to see Kell in there with a Jones for example, but as you say the WBA is the easiest route atm so why not try for that belt and then if all goes well, with a strap he puts himself in a much stronger position as regard to getting bigger fights and more % coin wise.
Its time to step him up. He's passed every test so far easily enough, I would like to see him in with someone who has something left at world level.
