Could Calzaghe outbox Joe Louis like Billy Conn did?

I can't believe the lowly estimation of Calzaghe by an otherwise astute group of people. I agree, stylewise, the Louis matchup is bad for him, but accomplishment and ability-wise he is definitely up there with Conn. There seems to be a great deal of denial here not only about Calzaghe's abilities but about Louis' place in the canon of great heavies. Face it, Louis was taken into deep waters and losing to a 174 lber. Yes, Louis, a consensus top3 alltime HW taken to task by a LHW. Who today from the supermiddle or light heavy ranks would challenge Vitali or Wlad? One could point to RJJ wipe-out of Ruiz, but then you are comparing Ruiz to Louis, something none of us want. Toney only beat a very depleted Holy, again nothing like Louis. While I give Conn credit for the great run at 175, can it be true that he is given a tad too much credit overall in order to maintain the canonic stature of Louis?

I don't know of any fight where Calzaghe was hurt.

Maybe we have different definitions of hurt.

I use the word to describe a fighter who is in trouble.

Joe was never in any trouble, even when KDd.

As for the fight, I would give Louis a 95-98 % chance of KOing Calzaghe.

If he didn't and it went to the cards, it's a pickem fight.

    So little Joe has a 1% - 2.5 % chance of winning.

Cazlaghe is a pressure-fighter/swarmer albeit an unconventional one. I don´t think a smw coming at Louis can beat him, especially not one with a defence like Joe C. has. He would get clobbered and stopped before the 5th.

Clazaghe fought 2 light heavyweights, one was 43, the other was 40 ,both floored him, with right hands, Louis's best punch.

    Calzaghe never fought a heavyweight.

Louis takes out Calzaghe the first time he lands clean.

Calzaghe is in front of you ,he does not have Conn's footspeed to evade punches neither does he have Conn's pedigree at Light Heavy and Heavyweight.

All the revisionist talk in the world will not convince me that Calzaghe has the ghost of a chance here.

If Louis has to come down to 168, Calzaghe has a good chance. But, seriously, what McGrain said.

Doubt it, but I bet he could get knocked out like Billy Conn did.

    Absolutely.

I'd pick Kabary Salem, Robin Reid, David Starie, Charles Brewer, Byron Mitchell, and Mikkel Kessler to have their moments and give Louis trouble. I'd take a 40-year old Roy Jones Jr., a 43-year old Bernard Hopkins, and a weight dropping near retirement short notice Chris Eubank to also give Louis fits.

Some look at Calz' career and note how he doesn't have even one single non-controversial KO of a decent fighter in his ENTIRE career (and how if you exclude the two most controversial REF stoppages (Mitchell & Sheika) you discover that Joe has ZERO KOs/TKOs in his entire (ESB) lauded career - except for basically a bunch of bums, fat guys, old guys, and old fat bums he fought in the beginning of his career). Some often mention that he never fought one single great fighter in their prime. Others note that he fought nearly all of his fights against **** poor competition (mostly bums, domestic/regional opp, former rather than reigning champs, other dross) at home with the same handful of judges and refs. And, still others just laugh at the idea of him being anything more than a good fighter/athlete who didn't fight anyone great and prime because he would have been KO'd as it is clear that he simply doesn't have the athletic talent to get out of the way of punches from the few - FAR past prime - great old men he did face (and struggled mightily with).

Nonetheless, S-U-R-E-L-Y Calzaghe could have stood in with Louis. After all, this is ESB .. where "demographics" produces a load of picks and poll results.

Someone really ought to run a census to spell out the demographics of the Eastside Boxing posting population. Then compare the results against the mix found in major professional sports. The ONLY explanation for so many regularly idiotic, moronic, and laughable poll results and thread opinions would surely be even easier to discern.

Or, just have an athletic competition for the entire site and we may well discover that it is largely akin to a musical performance by the deaf - so few decent athletes among the posting population that a substantive portion of the poll results and opinions make perfect sense when placed or considered in context.

Is Calzaghe even as good as Louis in a pound for pound sense?

Would he necesarily win even if Louis was his size?

    No.

Pressure swarmer versus a Joe Louis. And Joe Louis is the best Joe Louis.

Predicting a first round KO in favour of Louis might sound like I'm under-estimating Calzaghe but I feel it's entirely possible. Louis was not a slow starter in my view, although he arguably suffered from defensive lapses especially early in fights. Most of the time Louis atleast knocked down his opponent in the first round if not knocking them out. I say Calzaghe gets hit with a counter right hand and is unable to recover. He tends to be careless early on and makes up the gameplan as the fight goes on.
