he'd make a bundle today.what with his power, his reluctance to train, his whit and his charisma and not forgetting that left hook. the bloke was a star, albeit a dirty one
Damn that vid of the louis knockdown was great slowed down, he hurt him quite badly for a few seconds, should have piled on to him right away, may have got him again.
I find the story hard to believe considering an in shape Dempsey coming off a huge exhibition tour was spanked by Kingfish ... this story smells like fantasy to me ..
If it had not been Louis another less Heavyweight may have fell victim to that hook. Galento beat a lot of good fighters and even beat some of the avoided Black Murderers row Heavy's of the time such as Leroy Haynes, Lorenzo Pack and Eddie Blunt. I think Tony would have been a better fighter had he trained but not so sure how much hype is put into him not training. I think Tony had that cave-man body type but he had a hell of a hook. a puncher is a puncher.
They sparred before multiple witnesses, and not just once. Here's at least one account published at the time. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=950&dat=19340802&id=7KgLAAAAIBAJ&pg=1830,6892324
He had a good left hook and he knew when to throw it. He knew the basics but was not a technical wizard by any means. He was tough as old boots and had plenty of heart. He was also a very dirty fighter, very dirty! Louis was down quite a bit though so I don't agree with what you are suggesting above. If that same shot landed on Marciano, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, Mercer, McCall, and some others... they may have remained standing. Had that same shot landed on Patterson, Moorer, or even Lewis or Wladimir Klitschko? Maybe Galento would prevail? Probably not though!
Sure, why not? Dempsey was only 39 years old and an all-time great. Many felt he was the best HW ever at that point (1934). On a side note... during World War II he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1945, at age fourty-nine, he fought alongside his men on Okinawa Beach.
Ray Arcel also claimed to have witnesed it. A shot fighter can sort of be what they used to be in a sparring session.
Because of Louis aggressive style he did get caught and dropped but he also got up and scored KO's and was never really hurt, except for when young vs Schmeling and older vs Marciano and it still took more than one punch to keep him down. Joe Louis had fine whiskers.
Interestingly, the article doesnt mention him getting a new manager. In fact it says Dempsey wanted to do it again tomorrow.
I wasn't saying he had a glass jaw. I'm just saying that he was dropped a few times... sometimes by guys who weren't even huge punchers. Sure, he usually came back to stop those guys... he was Joe Louis for God's Sake, he only lost 3 times! It doesn't mean that Tony had Louis in much trouble. It doesn't mean that Tony would hav ebeen able to drop the guys I mentioned above either.
