At the last minute I got a chance to go to Atlantic City to see the fight. Props to Martinez. He did what he had to do. Seeing a fight from the cheap seats might be good atmosphere but hard to tell what is going on sometimes. I'm glad that Martinez has will have the lineal title at least. We still have that at the middle weight division and that is always a good thing. When I get home I'll have to get a copy of the fight and watch it so I can get a better idea of what went on. Kelly did seem to start changing the tide before it shifted back. I have limited access to the net. I will say this. I expect Kelly to move to SMW. He came dangerously close to losing the title on the scale. I was at the weigh in and you could see he was still 'glistening' when he came in. I overheard two people from his camp talking and they thought he would vacate his titles on the scale. If you watch the weigh in, watch Jack and some of Kelly's people on stage after the weight is announced. They celebrate like they had just won the fight. That is how close it was. I'm not saying this to make excuses. Props to Martinez. A fighter's weight problem is part of the game. I've said numerous times that I think previous day weigh ins should be eliminated. I have been consistent on that point. I am just 'reporting' on what I saw and why I think that Kelly should move up and let Marinez and Williams duel it out for the MW belts. I'm on a 'motel machine' so I don't know how much longer I can monopolize it. Again, props to Martinez.
Other than "props to Martinez" the entire post was an excuse, which I'm sure he'll go further into during the weeks to come
Making weight may have had something to do with it, but I don't think Pavlik will set the world alight at SMW either. He was not well against Hopkins, I accept that. But I don't accept that the Martinez loss should be discounted as you would have it. Sorry. Styles make fights and Martinez has the style to make Pavlik look bad, true! But...watch the fight and suck it up. Kelly was pretty much taken to school, styles notwithstanding, by a light middleweight!
Sorry you had to watch your boy lose, but pounts for being a man and posting the props thread. I don't know if Pavlik needs to go up to 168 per se, but he definitely needs some kind of shakeup. He looked slow and lacked snap in there, plus he wasn't doing any of the standards tactics against a southpaw. Hopefully for him and his fans, he'll get a chance to make improvements. Martinez-Williams II is going to be interesting.
Good boy Hermit. Don't let this loss let you down too much and keep supporting Kelly. Gonna be a helluve job now, but the sweeter the comeback will be, I promise!
Hermit, though you seem to pretty much be overtly making an excuse(even though you say you're not), did you not think this might be an issue when you were saying "oh Pavlik came into camp weighing 185 packing on more upper body muscle" etc? You knew he was gonna have to take all that weight off.
