Between you and me, I bet Calzaghe has slickly punched a lot of boxes in his time. He's pretty popular in the UK. And now that we know he parties...
You sure you know who Calzaghe is? Joe had a GRANITE chin. His recovery powers were some of the best the sport has ever seen even when knocked down. And Joe liked a fight. He was relatively easy to hit and would slug it out if drawn into a fight. Watch his fights with Byron Mitchell and Charles Brewer then come see me.
43 year old Hopkins took Pavlik up to 170 and beat him. 35 year old Martinez has come up from welterweight and beat Pavlik at his best weight. This just shows now that even at his best weight, Pavlik was a flawed, one dimensional fighter and taking him two weights above his best weight and beating him is nothing special at all.
I knew this would happen. Pavlik never mastered the fundamentals but I must say his jab is much improved. He used a non telegraphed jab, but a jab is not going to be enough.
Give me a break Firstly, the Hopkins fight was ages ago and Pavlik has not looked good since. Secondly, Martinez is another good fighter who used boxing skill to expose Pavlik as one dimensional. Bhop, did was he was supposed to do, plain and simple.
this will have a cascade effect and everyone would seem overrated and it will start with taylor. but it's not as big to me back then when people are bringing bhop's shut-out of pavlik then as some-kind of an upset of the year for i picked bhop to win then.
I'm not taking anything away from Pavlik. Pavlik is very good. Pavlik just lacks coordination and he telegraphs his punches which make him easy to counter. Hopkins picked him apart because that version of Pavlik telegraphed all his punches for the entire fight. This version of Pavlik can throw non telegraphed jabs and counter punch even if it's not really his style. I think Pavlik improved a lot since his loss to Hopkins. I think he showed that he has some boxing skill and is not one dimensional because he did adapt. He just couldn't beat Martinez and honestly he should be glad he was in with Martinez because Williams would have knocked him out. If Martinez could bloody him up like this, Williams throwing 100-200 punches a round would knock Pavlik out.
The crazy thing is the way people post on here you would think this was what they really thought. It posters like the thread starter that explain why we have so many over hyped protected fighters.
Martinez is a much tougher fight for Pavlik than Williams. Williams stands straight in front of you and has little or no defence. Martinez is different.
