everyone says, "he is what he is." And that is true to a point. His potential has not been maxed out of his skill set, no matter how limited some think it is. There are so many things he can still do and improve on that will make a world of difference.
PW would beat on KP..too many punches would be coming at him..also, PW is not slow by any means..KP seems to have trouble with speedy fighters..PW fights the right game and he can make it a much easier night than some of ya'll think..
you maybe right. but kelly can take shots. thats never been his problem. its when the other guy isnt there to be hit...thats when he is in trouble. williams has shown that he can be found.
People often take it to an extreme. No, he won't be dancing circles around opponents and slipping laterally so much. That doesn't mean he can't learn to time his opponents better.
Going into the fight it was always expected that it would take Kelly a few rounds to figure out Martinez. Had the second cut not happened, would Martinez have been able to turn the tide back his way? I don't know. I do know on the overhead screen at the hall, they showed a picture of Sergio between rounds when Kelly was staging his comeback that gave me some hope. Sergio looked shell shocked. Nothing like he was between rounds in the Williams fight. Bottom line, once the bell rings, the fighter is in there and have to use their best judgment on what they think will be the most effective for them. Kelly's/Jack's plan was working until the cut.
i agree. there hasnt seemed to be much movement towards, or much success in, correcting what is very correctable since he won the title. he was right in it up until the championship rounds so who knows what even minor corrections would do for him.
i truly believe he can beat martinez. but i also believe if he isnt 100% prepared, he will get beat again since Sergio's style is the type that can give Kelly fits. jsimps said kelly was saying his legs left him. either way, you are right herm, he was right there until the championship rounds. he made adjustments in the middle of the fight that paid off. I know you and your son have made some observations about things that can be improved on...so hopefully this can happen. i have faith that it can happen.
I disagree. I think Kelly can learn to be a counter puncher. He should have played like he was hurt on the ropes and then sneak his big right hand in and won by KO. You have to learn how to adjust. Kinda like corrie sanders did to wlad. Leaned up on the ropes like he was hurt and then slam that big left on wlad's glass chin. Damn that fight was funny.
I don't know Herm. Pavlik only won 3 rounds on most quality scorecards (take Dwyer's for example who also saw a much more one-sided fight than the very biased HBO commentary tried to sell). In my view Martinez already came back a bit winning the very close 8th (could've gone either way I admit), then "counter-outfigured" Pavlik, became very aggressive and landed like 10 consecutive left hands on Kelly's face including the flush bomb that opened up the cut. By the time the blood started to bother Kelly's vision, Martinez already turned the tide, and bigtime! The cut wasn't opened by accident, but by the biggest rally of the fight. Did it help Martinez to win even wider? Certainly.
There are many things that Kelly could do better but to me this is his biggest problem : Kelly always seems like he needs to reset every time a fighter moves from where he's standing. The slick fighters don't stay too long right in front of other boxers and when a fighter doesn't stay at least a certain period of time in front of Kelly, it seems like he freezes for a little bit and needs to just reprogram himself to the new look the other guy gives him. The result from this is Kelly's workrate dropping drastically. Obviously Pavlik needs to cut the ring much better, close the distance faster, fight taller more often, fight inside more efficiently, etc., but he mostly needs to learn how to fight out of position and be able to let his hands go in such circumstances.
good observations. these are things that he can do. its not like what you've pointed out is unattainable. many people are calling for jack's head on here. i can't sit here and lie and say i'm at his training camps so i know what they do and what they work on or if someone else would do a better job. all i know is that big strong fighters with limited movement have shown great improvement under the right circumstances.
