    This.

GSP and Shields are the number 1 and 2 in the division. The fight would be more competitive than any of GSP's previous fights of late.

What makes Shields so different from other guys with wrestling backgrounds is that he does not try to muscle the single leg take-down. Shields grabs the leg and simply holds on until he gets you. Shields is so relaxed you can't call his single leg's relentless, yet he makes it very clear he has no intentions of letting go. I wouldn't be surprised to see him eventually get Pierre on the ground. Pierre was injured while briefly on his back against Alves, so I don't know if he appeared uncomfortable because of his injury or his position.

Shields is also bigger than Penn or Serra. Shields may have a better chance of making something happen from his own back, which is a very likely to be a position he would find himself in.

Pierre would be a very hard problem for Shield to solve. Pierre may be capable of taking him down with most of his attempts, and be able to regain his footing to do it again and again. This allows Pierre to keep scoring, and to keep putting Shields in his most vulnerable position, standing. Pierre could conceivably keep this pattern going as long as it takes to ko Shield, or win a wide decision. I still wouldn't write Jake off. Due to his size, he may be more dangerous on the ground than anyone Pierre has taken down.

Shields isn't bigger, strong or a better wrestler than Hughes or Kos. Maybe Fitch, maybe not. I doubt Shields would be able to take GSP down. Also, GSP would have a HUGE advantage on the feet and would probably want to keep it there and try to stop Shields that way or at least hurt him and only then take him to the ground.

No, he isn't. He is a much bigger submission threat, however.

    I agree.

As far as actually scoring with take downs, I don't know. I believe if he gets Pierre's leg, he can the fight to the ground. Shields took Henderson down every round. Shields mounted Henderson each round, 2-5. This fight took place at 185. I've never seen Henderson completely neutralized and controlled like that.

No....But i think i underestimated him...He's better than i originally thought..one dimensional but very effective & persistant. A serious & dangerous opponent for anyone imo. His last defeat was in 2004...pretty impressive especially in mma.

off topic but i have never seen a more sorry excuse of a punch then what jake shields does. seriously does he deliberately try to not hurt his opponent?

GSP would murder this guy. You wont be calling him boring after this fight because he will explode on Sheilds and send him back to the joke of an organization he belongs to.

Sure Shields has subbed most of his recent opponents; you're right there. But it's not as if Hughes wasn't committed to taking GSP down and being on top. He tried to take him down but couldn't and GSP tried to take him down and did. I'm not sure how much of the stuff to believe about Henderson being injured leading to his **** poor takedown defense, but I've never seen anyone get that deep on a single against GSP, much less over and over again. There are plenty of guys that can stay up and land strikes and work for underhooks/wizzers etc while on one leg. Clearly Henderson couldn't the other night, but I wouldn't put it past GSP.

I think that Shields realizes he is in more trouble standing than almost any place on the ground. That's why I said I didn't know if Shields could score a takedown, as in wind up in the dominate position. I was saying I think that if he gets hold of Pierre's leg, Shields will get the fight on the ground. Shields may end up on his own back in the process.

Now whether he can keep Pierre on the ground is the question. Pierre may not have any interest in gnp, or trying to submit, if facing Shields.

lol those punches do look weak. He mounted henderson for 2 minutes and couldn't stop him with all those punches. He should have just gone crazy and kept punching. Maybe the ref would have stopped it.

After re-thinking about it. GSP would wreck Shields.

No, but I would love to see him in the UFC. I think he need 2 good wins before he gets the title shot but those 2 fights could be very good. Maybe Shields/Hardy then Shields/Fitch.
