Just watched the latest TUF. In the first round of the first fight that kaycee guy got picked up and driven into the mat on his head. Coming from a rugby background that is what i would call a spear tackle. i can't believe that a sport would allow a move that is so likely to break a guys neck and paralyse them. I love MMA slams, bombs takedowns all that stuff. But when a guy is up in the air and kind of powerless to turn him upside down and try to drive the top of his head into the matt is just a bit cowardly and unpalatable. They should ban it before someone gets crippled on a big show and then the authorities will come in heavy handed and ban loads of other techniques as well. i know loads of keyboard tuugh guys will come on here calling me a *****, but if not wanting to see a young athlete get maimed and crippled makes me a *****, then I'll put myself forward as captain of the ***** club.
I love your expression " keyboard tough guys" I'm definitely going to be borrowing that one. But I hope you're not talking about TUF 11 episode 4. because of not seen that one yet, it's only a very slight spoiler if it is the latest episode, no big deal.
Im pretty sure it is banned under the unified rules... there were people raising the question recently when someone (sorry, forget who - was in UFC) held in a rear naked choke stood up and slammed his opponents head into the ground, and escaped the choke. People were saying it's illegal - but it was ruled not so - as the guy holding the choke had the option to release and protect himself. However, if you are controlling your opponent, and slam them head first (spear tackle) it is illegal - it's all to do with who's controlling who. IMO, the incident on TUF would normally be a breach of the rules - not sure why it wasn't pulled up.
I think it was Kurt Pellegrino escaping a choke by Fabricio Camoes at 111.... god, that was doing my head in trying to remember it.atsch
I can see why the RNC incident is OK. Like you say the only reason a person couldn't defend their head is if they refused to let go of the RNC. TBH I think that human nature and reflex would (nearly) always cause a guy to let go and instinctivley protect his own head, or at least roll his head forward to cushion the blow. But that slam I saw the other night was awful. You would be disorientated and unsure of what the guy who picked you up was doing then all of a sudden BAM, wheelchair. I love all other aspects of MMA but seeing that sort of thing would stop me letting my sons do MMA. If the sport really wants to grow, go more mainstream and rival boxing then it needs to sort this **** out. What makes it even worse is that this kind of incident was present in other sports (rugby, etc) and has been outlawed. It kind of makes MMA look barbaric and reckless. I maintain that there is nothing entertaining about seeing a man picked up, upended and then having his head driven into the floor. I know a lot of people on here will disagree, but they are twats who have never had it happen to them.
Is that the one where he tried the front flip to scape a standing choke? That **** should be illegal.
This one: This content is protected It's not illegal, as the person applying the choke has the option to release and defend himself - he's the one in control. I still think the slam in TUF should have resulted in a point deduction - a clear breach of the rules, even if Dana was shouting "oh my ****ing god... ****" or whatever else he was cheerleading.
oh my god i seriously just cringed watching that clip. Most other moves won't paralyze you but yea dumping someone on the head like that or piledriving them could cause some seriously problems.it wouldn't be unlike those hilarious videos of bored trailer park kids doing their backyard wrestling crap and getting seriously hurt.
