    Hi,

Ive been boxing for about a year but last december i fell hard on my left elbow (full bodyweight fall onto the point of the elbow on concrete). I rested it for a month but when I went back to training when I threw a straight left (southpaw) I would get a shot of pain at full extension. The pain would last for 10-15secs then it would be tender. I had an xray in Febuary but it showed nothing. Started physio therapy but no real help.
Ive worked around the injury since I had a comp in march (trained myself not to fully extend when throwing the straight), but in the final of the comp I injured it again.Throughout the course of the injury I have sometimes gotten pins and needles in my hand(mainly my fingers while sleeping). Ever since the fight in march ive being sporadically getting pins and needles when I sleep in my ring and baby finger.I have been resting it since the fight, and am due to see a specialist next month.

Just wondering if you have any opinions as to what this may be? especially linked with the pins and needles?
Has anyone had an injury/heard of an injury like this before?

possibly medial epicondylitis with some damage to your ulnar nerve which would explain the tingling

sounds like you have legit experience, or excellent google skills

i'd agree with the nerve damage part, the other part i have no comment on cuz i have no idea what that is and no time for google right now.

I don't care enough about his problems to google it, I just did an assignment on medial epicondylitis (golfers elbow, lateral epicondylitis is tennis elbow) and up to 20% of people with ME have tingling in those fingers due to issues with the ulnar nerve. ME is a degenerative condition that can be brought on by a fall aswell so it could possibly be that but considering he feels pain at extension it could just as easily not be as pain is usually felt during forearm pronation and wrist flexion in ME. I guess if he's over rotating his punches it could be?? Where is the pain threadstarter?

I have the exact same thing, its called curbital tunnel syndrome. its pressure on the ulna nerve that is giving you pins and needles in those fingers. it will more than likley need to be surgicaly corrected.

    Cheers for the replies.

Im attaching a picture of an elbow
The shot of pain I experience is in the Olcranon fossa. Not on the out side but in that socket of the ball joint and only at full extension (final position of punch)
I have no pain in my forearm at all.
The only pain I feel is in the ball joint socket at full extension and to a lesser but more constant extent the tricep tendon.

Would be interested on your opinions.

Posts like this are stupid. Anyone can give you many random ideas on what could be wrong with your elbow, but will that help you? No. You have to be 100% sure of what's wrong before treatment, so why ask what it could possibly be on an Internet forum?

Go talk to the specialist you've arranged to see and take it from there.

People really need to stop trying to diagnose injuries over the Internet.

Could be a number of things mate, maybe a stress fracture? The only thing I know for sure is that you have an irritation to your ulnar nerve, alot of elbow injuries can affect the ulnar nerve so it doesn't make it any easier to say what it is. Hopefully the specialist can help you out, sometimes you have to get a few different xrays and speak to different doctors to find out exactly what is wrong with you. For most elbow injuries you need to rest it/manage it carefully with strengthening and stretching when your pain symptoms improve. Punching/throwing puts alot of force on the area you are talking about so boxing should be out of the question atleast for a little while

If someone wants a general idea of what might be wrong then I don't see what is wrong with that. Unless it is serious enough to need surgery then elbow injuries are all treated basically the same. The fact that he injured it in a fall means that it's likely not a technical/overuse issue so once he gets it right he shouldn't get a reoccurence of the injury.
