Dumb, da, dumb, da, dumb....He was a middleweight at the time. You are aware of that??? And he intentionally selected Ruiz because he knew the guy was a joke. One year later Jones was knocked cold by Antinio Tarver. Next fight after that he was knocked cold by Glenn Johnson. Next fight after that he lost to Tarver again. You really don't know your boxing history. Jones was a faded fighter by that point and he still toyed with a man who naturally outweighed him by over 50 pound! Yes, it was embarassing and it did hurt the division....

I've always thought Ruiz was a solid fighter who made the most out of his abilities. He fought some of the best heavyweights during his career and won his fair share of them. But I'm very glad he's retiring. His fights were awful to watch and he was a first rate cry baby to boot.

He was a light heavyweight, and you're questioning my boxing history?

Jones wasn't past it at the time either he was dominating strong and P4P#1, moving down in weight after the heavyweight fight is what began his slow end despite beating Tarver the first time. At least go to boxrec if you didn't exist back then or can't download these fights.

John Ruiz - ALWAYS A CHAMPION

Sports stars, damn, how they transcend sports and enter our very lives, in a non-gay way. Take for example Floyd Mayweather, known the world round not just for boxing, but also for WWE, he knocked out the big show with one punch. Footballers, cheered on by thousands each week, and then hated when they move clubs, talked about all week at work, by everybody. But one fighter in particular, over the best part of 15 years, has shared what can only be described as a roller coaster ride so fascinating that people, real life people, from all over the globe feel so attached to this hero that they feel the very emotions this man feels. The man I am talking about is of course, my personal favourite boxer of all time, including Archie Moore and Henry Armstrong, the man himself, John Ruiz. Let us not forget, George W. Bush, then president of America invited John Ruiz over to the white house because John Ruiz is so f***ing awesome, and George Bush isn't, f***ing rep.

Future generations may not ever have the opportunity to witness a man like John Ruiz. He was forever the underdog, and now he has retired, boxing is missing is something, a man everyone loved to root for. The guy who could turn it around with one punch, in a heartbeat. John Ruiz was so bloody, so brutal, he became the most ducked individual to ever grace the squared ring. Let us have a quick re-cap on the men who ducked John Ruiz:-

    1) Lennox Lewis - Forget Riddick Bowe, the fight that would have been a super superheavyweight battle, the name forever linked to Lennox Lewis for all the wrong reasons is of course, John Ruiz. Lennox Lewis, undisputed champion, former Ruiz sparring partner, had a mandatory defence to make against the number 1 contender John Ruiz back in 2000. Instead of facing Ruiz, Lennox Lewis gave up his WBA belt and instead faced Michael Grant, whom he punched in the jaw-region and rendered unconscious inside of two rounds. The fact is, Lewis ducked Ruiz, he knew he would have lost.

    2) Vitali Klitschko - Had a defence to make of his newly won title he got by battering an old semi-pro golfer, Corrie Sanders. Decided in his first defence to really put on a show, prove he was 'REAL CHAMPION' and took on 57th ranked in the world Danny Williams, when John Ruiz was free (and a title holder, and ranked top 5 in all 18 organisations, including GQ Magazines "Greatest guys in sports"). Pissed off that Klitschko had decided to go with Danny Williams, John Ruiz signed to fight Golota, one of the toughest men ever and ranked #3 in the world, behind John Ruiz and John Ruiz's shadow. John Ruiz beat him.

    3) Chris Byrd - The resumes have similarities, Jimmy Thunder, David Tua, Holyfield, Golota, McCline, Oquendo, and both guys won belts which Lennox Lewis didn't want to defend against them. So, why did this mega fight never take place? Because Chris Byrd knew he could not defeat John Ruiz. And of all the common opponents, one glaringly obvious fact arises, John Ruiz beat the men in much better fashion than Chris Byrd did, except for Tua.

    4) Mike Tyson - Could have faced John Ruiz, instead he went after the obviously softer choice in Frank Bruno, to win a title he later vacated so he didn't have to fight Lennox Lewis. To prove a point, John Ruiz went out the night before to face the unbeaten apparent "heir to the thrown" David Tua, a real challenge. Shows who has got balls and who hasn't.

    5) Ike Ibeabuchi - Huge mountain of a man, knocked out Chris Byrd in similar fashion to what John Ruiz would have done to him, The President was all set to face John Ruiz after he beat David Tua. In fact, the contracts were faxed to him and were awaiting his signature. Knowing he had nowhere to go, except face John Ruiz, Ike Ibeabuchi snapped and went on a rampage, GTA style and got nicked. He is still in prison. Every night before he goes to sleep he checks underneath his bed for John Ruiz.

Of course, the list doesn't end there, I could go on, George Foreman, Moore, Peter McNeely. But the one glaring name on the list, and it has arose a few times, is perhaps so obvious, the number 6 doesn't do it justice. So I will give it the first letter in the alphabet;-

    A) DAVID TUA - The words David Tua and f***ing don't often go together, but they do when you are talking about John Ruiz. Because David Tua got a lucky punch on John Ruiz (who, by my own view was a) winning the fight b) clearly carrying an injury in the fight c) probably drugged d) f***ing robbed) and came out with a KO1 on his record, he thought his life was set. WRONG. The only good victory on David Tua's resume is John Ruiz, that is what he is famous for, and guess what, it wasn't even the real John Ruiz. John Ruiz didn't even become the John Ruiz he is today until he was in his prime, so Tua's win if it were legitimate would be irrelevant. Since '96, John Ruiz has demanded a rematch with David Tua. It never happened. David Tua fought Hasim Rahman, and got a draw. A few months later, John Ruiz battered Hasim Rahman and got a UD. Then, rather than fighting Ruiz for the belt he regained because Roy Jones couldn't fight him again, David Tua semi-retired! What a *****, I wanted more than anything to watch Ruiz get revenge on David Tua, I'm not a violent guy, but I wanted John Ruiz to punch him in the belly. I get so wound up now thinking about that smug punk David Tua thinking he beat John Ruiz, I had to hold my breath for 12 seconds. Why 12 seconds? Because that is the number John Ruiz has printed on the back of his football shirt, that's the amount of title fights John Ruiz has been in, and I didn't think I could get to 13 without passing out.

So there you have it, the greatest fights never to come off because these so called 'warriors' are reduced to some kind of creature that has no balls, the kind of wishy-washy b******s that say they support Manchester United, but have never been to Manchester. We all know (and f***ing hate) these type of people, and this is why we all rallied behind John Ruiz, because he was like one of the guys, only better. He had a voice, and his voice was his fists, and when he let his fists go, the world seemed a better place if only for the 3 minute rounds in which John Ruiz would batter the **** out of somebody. Poetry in motion, but not **** poetry about clouds and thoughts, manly poetry. If Jimmi Hendrix weren't murdered and was still alive today, he would have wrote the greatest riffs off his life based on John Ruiz.

For the future generations, you missed out. John Ruiz, 'The Quiet Man', wasn't a liar. He didn't say he was going to do one thing, and do the other. He didn't sell out. He wasn't afraid to face fire, in fact he is a certified fireman. John Ruiz was the kind of guy you needed to have growing up, someone who would always be there, and when the going got tough, you could rewatch his fights and pretend you were John Ruiz. Every kid did this. The older guys had Rocky Balboa, who was total ****, we had John Ruiz, who was f***ing great. It feels like a part of me has died, the innocent part, and I am sure thousands of other real men, such as myself, feel the same, in a non-gay way. I absolutely hate goodbyes - John Ruiz lives on as champion, always.

    Yours in manliness,
    Fantana

P.S Yes, the rumours are true, I am working on my second book, a John Ruiz book, which could be out in time for Christmas.

I don't need boxrec. I saw the fights. And I remember Jones's explanation for why he selected Ruiz. He knew Ruiz was weak and that he couldn't beat the others. And yes, he was on the downside of his career and he was outweighed be over 30 pounds. The only thing you were right about was that Jones was a lightheavyweight. Good on you! The larger point that you seem unable to discern is that Ruiz was a weak fighter, even in his prime. He was so weak that a former Middleweight champ who was 175 stepped up, toyed with him and then didn't even bother to take the belt. I was a fan of the heavies that the time. And yes, it was an embarassment.

Isn't it far, far more likely that Lewis knew that Ruiz was a fraud and that it was fight that HBO would probably have passed on. At the time, Ruiz was an absolutely joke--easily one of the worst mandatory defenses any unified champ had ever been forced to make. Look it up. The Quietman's best victory when he was selected as a mandatory was against a 40 year old Tony Tucker. He didn't have one win against anyone who was ranked in the top 20 at heavyweight. Lennox didn't want to waste his time.

I am amazed at how many times Haye hit Ruiz with clean shots at the back of the head and nobody ever mentioned about it. In some fights, it is enough to disqualify a fighter.

That is simply the funniest thing I have ever read on eastside. John Ruiz is a chump. Not a champ. Lennox Lewis scared of Ruiz. Sh!t thats funny....
