With it being the anniversary of one of the greatest fights off all time, thought it would good to do a book club style thread where we watch the fight and the Legendary Nights documentary. That whole series is brilliant my favourite being Taylor v Chavez which is really poignant when you see the state of Taylor now
I actually think the fight is overrated. 1st round: One of the greatest rounds ever. 2nd round dies down a bit. Hagler takes Hearns out in the 3rd. Amazing to think a super fight could be so explosive, but knowing what we do of Haglers chin and Hearns suspect durability (at times, he was full of heart) I think it was more of a case of 'you had to be there'. Only my opinion, too of my favourite fighters as well, but never really a winnable fight for Hearns IMO.
I've made quite a few posts saying this fight is overated. Bar the cut the fight is effectively over after 90 seconds. After the end of the 1st its just a walk down job for Hagler with a bit of suspense added due to Steele calling "time" to look at Haglers cut. Thats not to say its not a great fight, just not the Top 3 fight of All Time that a lot of people make it.
I like the Tyson vs Douglas one.... and also Bowe vs Golota/Holyfield pair. Not quite sure where Rock Newman came from, but he's certainly not from this planet atsch
i think its down to the face it was a "Mega Fight" that lived up to the hype. they so rarley do. same in all sports. how often is the FA cup final a good match?? when you get to the top of any sport the level is so high that big fights will be tense affairs rather than thrillers.
I wish they'd bring Legendary Nights back. With the success of HBO's 24/7 series I thought would capitalise on it by bringing it back. So many fights to choose from.
