I just realized that mostly every time I throw a jab, he throws a counter jab and beats me to the punch... my jab connects, but not as flush as I'd like. what I have been employing into my style is a little bit of head movement and ditching the jab. he's a bit taller then me, so Instead I work on the inside and push him on the inside and work the body. I know it's not a good idea to ditch the jab though... what would you guys do? (I also noticed I was catching his jab a bit and that helped a lot! I'd catch his jab and counter with a right hand)
Is that like hooking a hooker? LOL...:hey Anyway, the way I land jabs against guys with a reach advantage is to slip their jab while stepping in as I counter with my own jab. Easier said than done and if you try too hard to pull it off you'll get predictable and he'll just have an even easier time landing his punches. Unfortunately I'm a little thick headed and tried the same thing over and over for more than one sparring session. Needless to say, someone's ass got handed to him on more than one occasion by the same guy! Against a guy with longer reach, try to get in the inside. Trying to counter his jabs with your own is going to be a losing battle for you, unless you have quicker footwork and handspeed and have overwhelming fighting experience than your opponent. As with anything, be flexible and adjust your strategy according to what works.
faking a jab and hooking is 1 option. It can be done coming forward or circling to your left if your orthodox. jab and parry the jab you know is coming and quickly come over that hand with a straight right. or just take the shot and move in close and work him over, try to pay attention to where he is in the ring, keep him in one quarter of it so he cant run.
Yeah, that's what I've been trying to do, he usually beats me to the punch, but I am able to bull him into the ropes and work his body.
If you are throwing your jab and he see's this and is STILL able to counter you before your punch lands this guy is extremely fast OR you are telegraphing your jab somehow. Get a trainer or someone to watch you and find out if this is the case. If so, you have some work to do obviously. If you are the type of physical fighter that puts a lot of power on his punches, you might just be loading up (telegraphing). Other things to do. You can jab to the body. Straight hard jab to the body but you must not bend at the waist to throw it. You have to bend your knees and throw it quickly, again, without telegraphing your punches. You can throw the jab and catch his with your right. Double and triple your jab. Don't let your opponent time you by getting into the habit of throwing one jab at a time. Feint the jab and throw a right overtop of his jab. Feint the jab and throw a hard right to the body just underneath his jabbing arm. The main things to learn are not to be predictable. (don't just throw the token one jab) Be able to work a variety of punches. Throw punches in combination. Do not telegraph your punches. Practice these in the gym and you will become a much better fighter.
head movement pressure cut the ring off catch his jab keep your head in his chest area to take his reach away watch out for uppercuts find angles if ya smaller ya gotta be tough and brave to get in their and keep in their. just because your pileing on pressure it doesnt mean you have to have good work rate it helps but short jabbing and spoiling his work is a more intelligent way to beat bigger man who jabs alot.
I agree with the above responses. But keep in mind that if you feint too much, your opponent will stop falling for them. Pick your spots, and if you think you can land one, throw a jab like you mean it. If he respects your jab, he'll more likely fall for your feints. Obviously you could just be a pressure type in-fighter to negate his reach advantage. But if you're not in top condition, you'll get exhausted fast.
thanks guys! I sparred again today and it was alot different. I would faint with the jab and come in with a big right cross. I'm switching partners later because he's going away. this Time I'm the bigger person and I can hopefully beat him to the punch now.
As profound as that sounds, I think throwing a Japanese at your opponent isn't the thing you should do.
haha woops..im a boxer not an english teacher lol catch the jab in palm of ur right then throw ur jab..they will walk in2 it so makes for a powerfull strong jab.
