WHo do you guys think was the better fighter based on 50% Hth skill and 50% resume? This is somewhat of a tough call but i think i know who id lean with:think These 2 are in my top 6 all time fighters what do you guys think?
RIght:good Although great fighters im not that biased WHo do you think was the greater fighter? Would you consider them ATGs?
I may overrate Tapia, but he is in my top 100. I pick him. If you mean ATG in the loose sense, like, say, "You go through boxing history, you will have to talk about this guy, because of relevance and he'll likely give a good account of himself against other greats of his respective division(s)." than yes. If you mean in a short-list, top 100, I wouldn't necessarily say that about both. But I can see why either guy would be on a short-list of sentimental favorites for sure.
Thats actually a tricky one IMO. Bobby really was a good fighter...I think he would have been more accomplished had he not have slog it out in a ridiculously stacked era. And even in saying that his top couple of wins are quite a bit better then Johnny's. Tapia in his peak was very impressive...More impressive than Bobby for me..I gotta agree with teeto, Im of the opinion now he is the top dawg H2H at 115. If that criteria was a little more skewed for resume Id almost be inclined to vote for Bobby...but Tapia's dominance at his peak weight and very impressive form on film puts him a bit ahead for this one IMO anarci.
Yeah, it's good you highlighted Chacon's good work, it seemed we were all neglecting him a bit here. It's great watching Chacon at work.
I went with Chacon. Tapia was an intense fighter, but never one of my favorites. Bobby was the better technician in his early days, in my opinion. No doubt Tapia would give a solid account of himself against many of the top guys at 115, but I wouldn't consider him the top dog there. Watanabe would get the better of him, I'd wager. I do think a disciplined Tapia would stand a better chance against Moon than a lot of others, though. He was one of few with the toughness and physicality to deal with him, along with the boxing skills to better hm.
Chacon as outstanding as he was could have been even better. I feel the Mancini fight was stopped too soon - didn't the referee see Bobby's slow starts against Limon and Boza Edwards not that long before this fight? Chacon was sparked out by the great Ruben Olivares when he was at his peak. No harm done there and he even gained some measure of revenge decisioning the great man when Olivares was past it in 1977. Chacon was fighting on even terms with an ATG in Arguello when he was badly cut and the fight had to be stopped. Chacon was loaded with talent. He knocked out the ferocious Danny "Little Red" Lopez in I believe 1974 or 75.' I know Tapia was superb I just did not his career as closely as Chacon's. Tapia was a good samarition when he thwarted an attempted mugging on the Atlantic City boardwalk near where I live. He intervened to help an elderly man from beating beaten and robbed. Despite his problems the man has a good, decent side to him. Why didn't his kind and brave act on the boardwalk get more publicity? Because the press prefers muckraking I guess.
I agree that the Mancini fight was stopped to quick but i also heard thru inside sources that he hardly trained for that fight and only went thru it for the Money, although he did have his moments in the 3 rounds. I dont even count that fight against him he was at the end, Mancini in his prime. Even against Olivares he was supposedly partying alot, not to take from Olivares he probably still would have won, but Bobby would have done much better. I agree with Rock though his competition was much better than Tapias and this is a tricky one thats why i put it up.
