I haven't had a fight yet, but I'm sparring a couple times a week. I seem to be improving my game, only problem is I keep getting ran down while I spar. Maybe it's because I usually spar with a guy about 5 inches taller than me and about 80lbs heavier. His hands feel like bombs on my head. His reach clowns mine and he counters everything I throw, I can't even get near him. Another guy is 20lbs heavier but I'm about 3 inches taller...he busted my nose. I sparred with a guy who weighs 40lbs less than me and I was doing very well...I guess I just need a lot more practice or maybe a sparring parter closer to my height/weight. I'm 6'0 180lbs. I know I need to work on my head movement. Kinda just wanted to rant, anyone have similar problems now or in the past?
If he's 5 inches taller and 80lbs heavier I have a feeling your trainer doesn't like you!! Years back my trainer put me through the same scenario with a seasoned CW when I was an amature WW. After one session I got out the ring and told him the heavybags in the corner, use that because I ain't learning squat getting my ass handed to me. If he can't get a guy your weight just refuse.
I feel your pain i am the lightest guy at my gym (lightweight) and stuck sparring 150+ guys its not fun to get hit lol
I kinda feel bad about bitching...I'm thinking I should just pay my dues and learn to move more. It shouldn't be as easy as it is for them to just hit me at will, I should be way quicker. I'm hoping this will pay off once I do fight a guy equal to me in size.
God, I'm stressed out. Next year I have to spar a relentless 160+lb ripped braziliian jiu justu fighter . And hes not planning on holding back. I'm 125 lbs. FFFFFFFFFFFFFF Any advice on winning? He's only using boxing. If that helps.
If your sparring is just a survival session against more experienced fighters then you aren't going to make much progress in the sport. There should be a plan in the sparring about what you are going to work on. You should have a trainer watching at all times and you should never just go in as a body simply to provide another fighter with someone to punch on. Get clear with someone what you want and need and become a student of the game. Learn everything you can and don't be afraid to speak up. People will respect you for that. Don't let your ego guide you into sparring because you think you will look like you are a punk if you don't. This is for YOU not anyone else.
All great advice! Always ask for feedback too. Not just from trainers, but also from your sparring partners and any spectators who happened to be around. Ask them about what you need to work on and what things you did that you did well. Always try to find out the reason why things worked out or didn't. Did you utilize your jab effectively? Do you need to work on slipping punches? Are you telegraphing punches? Do you need to work on landing your counters? Are you using too much head movement? Or too little? The list goes on and on...people don't always offer advice...sometimes you have to be willing to take it away from them...
Shouldn't be too bad. I'm 135lbs and everyone I spar is bigger than me, regularly get in there with guys 170lb+. You find big bangers at all weight classes...although obviously a banger at 170lbs is gonna hit harder than a banger at 126lbs...if the guy hits too hard, just tell him to hit a bit lighter. Box defensively, on the backfoot and try outbox him, not much more you can do than that.
Practice head movement in partner drills. You can train it on pads, double end bags, slip bag but nothing better than practicing it with real punches. Controlled sparring...so maybe just start off with jabs only, once your used to that and slipping them comfotably, add in right hands, then hooks until your fully comfortable defending against all shots.
I always sparred with my m8, he was 220lbs and I was 140 at the time. I gave up about 7 inches in height. I honestly didn't see it as a big deal...it really depends on the level of the boxer. I had been boxing for years and he had barely been boxing for a year.
Thanks for the advice you guys, I'll keep it all in mind. As for these guys I'm sparring, they are either current or former gold gloves champs from my state and a couple are about to turn pro very soon. They even have their names, pictures and belts up on the walls lol...these aren't just random dudes. I haven't even been doing this for a year yet.
well its not so much his size alone, he's eventually gonna go all out cuz hes an "angry fighter" and ripped to hell and back. I may have have better technique but he'll tag me eventually. My jaw hasn't truly been tested in while so I'm kinda uncertain on my damage tolerance. He's a supposedly heavy hitter from what I've heard. I have longer arms, faster speed and good power for my weight class though. I also have all summer to train though so that'll help a lot.
Its only sparring, if he hurts you he shouldnt be trying to finish you off. Also hard sparring all time is not advised but hard sparring now and again is, it toughens you up and gets you used to that situation. If he's angry fighter try discourage him with counters, you say you have better technique so thats your advantage I guess. Its sparring, whats the worse that could happen?
