I don't think we can attribute this to the Greeks considering its such a basic sport that basically every civilization that there has ever been has had boxing in some form or another. I'm pretty sure though that the oldest depictions of people boxing can be found in Egypt.

The guy did use the word modern. That is a clear qualification if his assertion.

I don't get the point of this thread. It's not like this expression is at all common anymore, and it's not some new fad that just popped up.

It's something you still hear every once in a while (particularly if the broadcaster is "old school") and it's amusing when you do.

It isn't particularly insulting, really. Think of it as synonymous with "buzzed". All fighters get buzzed at some point.

"That right hand really put him on ***** Street" = "That right hand really buzzed him". Why are you so up in arms about it with your "just shows how many people in here probably never stepped in a ring a day in their lives." and " so a boxer takes a couple of shots in a fight. and your point is..."?

It's simply a way of describing the action, a colorful one. Antiquated slang. Harmless.

I agree "***** street" sounds a little strange and a bit insulting especially since nowadays ***** and gay/****** are used interchangably.

I was saying the weeks leading up to the fight that I thought Mayweather would win close to 8 rounds. I just took the bet as a bit of fun, and let's be honest, most people thought Mosley had a legitimate chance.

It's a very commonly used phrase that is even used by boxers and commentators so take your "you never been in the ring before blah blah blah" and use it somewhere else.:good

Aye, considering 'gay' meant 'happy' and a '******' was a bunch of sticks used for firewood until those shape-shifting serpent seed Americans came along and decided to apply these terms to their twisted and sick San Franciscan lifestyles.
