Um Roy Jones in the 90's threw combinations. Combinations don't leave you open for counters if you throw and time them properly. There are many situations where Floyd could have/ should have thrown combo's but he didn't. I think he's just too safety minded to do it. He'd be a much better fighter if he did though. As I see it right now Floyd is a bit of a one note tune. He's very smart, but he relies on the same tactics again and again - lead left hook, lead right, counter straight right/uppercut, jab to the body. If he mixed it up a bit more and threw combinations and jabbed more, like a Pernell Whitaker, he'd be much better regarded in my book.
He throws em when he knows theyll land. hes not going to throw them for the sake of throwing them. His accuracy is off the charts.
I would have to agree with you on all counts. I guess as a fan you want to see the hands go. Manny doesn't mind getting hit and it seems to be working for him. They are just different fighters with different styles. When you look back on SRL highlights you can see a desire to knock the guy out, I like that.
He throws his combo w/ a delay, so instead of of 1-2-3-4, it's more like 1-2---3--4, but that's only when he doesn't respect you or thinks he can put you down. He hits you and reacts to your reaction, rinse repeat.
His timing on his combos is different, but that's because he's throwing for the openings, rather than throwing to create openings. As was said, most fighters throw a bunch of punches in the hopes that they will create an opening to land one or two. Floyd is accurate and fast enough that he doesn't need to waste punches just to land a couple. It's not as flashy as a guy who throws a ton of punches fast, but it is effective, economical, and safe. Given that he routinely lands in the 40% range I'd say it's working for him.
I would say because he don't need them to win. He's already and acurate puncher, so the majority of what he throws connect. If Floyd and Pac should ever meet, the excessive punching might be Pac down fall. He throws a lot of punches (combos) and leaves himself open for the counters, and Floyd is one of the best counter punchers in the game.
It's definitely not a weakness...I'm sure that Mayweather could be a great combo puncher if he wanted to, but he doesn't like getting hit, so you might not see that happen. But I did see him pop Mosley with quite a few combos the other night...
