PPV buys

I understand your point...but let's not forget DeLaHoya is the reason May, Mosley, AND Pac are so well known to casual fans.

 

Hmm if it doesnt do over 1.5 for a fight of this magnitued that just means You need a latino in there to get the big numbers.

Didnt i say if? Also they still are IMO even if this PPV does surpass those numbers. PBF is just a very well marketed figher. Just like you said there isnt really any Latino out there that is so hot but there is only 2 marketable fighters out there right now and thats Pac and PBF. Pac is there because he has beat alot of our Latino fighters and they want to see him lose and PBF is there because of his mouth and everyone wanting to see him lose.

As far as the next big star. It definately will be Alvarez. The kid showed in his debut that he is all Mexican. As soon as he got hit he didnt clinch or hold an arm ala PBF. he started firing back and came back to get his KO. The kid is still rough around the edges but extremely marketable. Ortiz could maybe make a comeback but he will live in Alvarez shadow i believe.
Also im sure Margarito and JMM will still do solid numbers. Not PBF or Pac numbers but better than any other fighter out there.

I like Alvarez but "grabbing the arm" as you call it is fighting smart. Saul better learn how to fight smart when he's hurt or he'll end up getting KOed like he almost did on Saturday night.:deal

 

The second biggest non HW ppv of all time is 1.4 million buys. So this fight could do under 1.5 million buys and still be second biggest ppvs of all time. Anything over 1 mill is very rare. So again, explain how two black fighters doing at least 1.2 mill buys proves you need a Latin fighter to do big ppv numbers.

 

I agree with Big Reg, 80% of the top PPV's in history were an all black main event. Please do some research, 1.

 

That is true but the current climate does support the fact that having a competitive Latino boxer makes it easier to get better PPV numbers.

Just look at HBO...

 

the fact is, is that Mosley isnt a PPV star in any sense of the word, only a local star to the south cali region. Floyd mayweather is a huge ppv draw- but he needs a good dance partner, as do most fighters, including pacuqiao. floyds fans also arent as diehard as hatton, pac and oscars, where theyll travel the world to see him fight, and buy EVERY ppv, they ll see every 2nd or so, they love and admire him- but aren t crazy about him- he just dosent bring it out of them like the others do.

in fact, the only fighter i can remmeber people willing to watch them fight against a bum , and pay ppv is probably oscar. we re all quick to annoint these guys ppv gods, but they re not quite up to the drawing power of an oscar and tyson quite yet. its not to the point where they could lose 2 in a row, then fight a bum , and still draw 800 000 like oscar could.

 

90"s to mid 2000's PPV numbers are not accurate numbers, because of the amount of people watching PPV on a hot box. It seems like everybody had one. It's much harder now to get free PPV. So some of the fights back then could have done much bigger numbers.

 

I know its a smart tecnnique. Im a fan of smart boxing but when the general public specially the Mexican fans see that in a fighter it makes them instant fans because of the whole machismo thing we tend to root for. Why do u think most people prefer Morales over Barrera? they were both great fighters but when the going got tough for both of them they reacted in different ways. Barrera would play it smart and Morales would keep firing back until he would go down.

Im not saying he is going to be like PBF and stay undefeated with his style but he will make for great wars and that itself can get u great PPV numbers even if ur not a marketing genius like PBF.

 

There's nothing worse than "hugging"(except for running) in a fight but using that tactic to buy some time when you're been hurt is perfectly acceptable.

The only reason this fight with 2 black fighters did so well is because of PBFs marketability. PBF can fight anyone and do big numbers. his trash talking obviously sells well.
But other than PBF and Pac You will not get good numbers on a PPV without a Latino headlining it.

Who do u think would sell better? PW-Mosley or PW-Margarito 2?
